A targeted self-monitoring intervention for inclusion and resource room settings that equips students to detect comprehension breakdowns in content-area textbooks using the Stop, Jot, and Fix protocol. Students learn to halt at checkpoints, jot active diagnostics, and deploy concrete repair tools to restore meaning.
"The asthenosphere's semi-viscous composition facilitates ductile deformation of overlying tectonic lithospheric plates under immense hydrothermal pressure."
1. STOP
Halted at line 20! Mental movie went dark after the word "semi-viscous."
2. JOT
"Hard words (viscous, ductile) + long sentence with no break."
3. FIX
"Warm soft rock under the crust flows like warm taffy, moving the plates."
Meaning restored! The mental movie is running again. Slide 5 of 7
CO-READING PARTNER ROUTINE
Collaborative Reading Roles
How to Run a Stop & Jot Partnership
1
Partner A: The Reader
Reads aloud until hitting the STOP & JOT CHECKPOINT.
Gives a 10-second summary without looking back at the paper.
2
Partner B: The Jotter
Listens closely: "Did that capture the main event?"
If unclear, calls "Brake!" and helps select a fix-up tool.
Switch roles at every Stop & Jot checkpoint in the reading! Slide 6 of 7
THE MASTER RULE OF STRONG READERS
Ready for Action
"Strong readers are NOT people who never get confused."
Strong readers simply catch their confusion early and refuse to leave until meaning is restored.

3 Subduction Zones: When Giants Collide
Lines 29–46
Where two moving tectonic plates smash into each other, the consequences are violent. Geologists classify these collision points as convergent boundaries. When a dense oceanic plate collides with a lighter continental plate, the heavier oceanic crust cannot stay on top. Instead, it gets shoved downward into the boiling mantle beneath the continent in a dramatic process known as subduction.
As the subducting slab plunges into the depths, friction generates staggering heat, causing parts of the descending plate and overlying mantle to melt. This buoyant magma rises through cracks in the continental crust, erupting onto the surface as chains of explosive volcanoes, such as the Cascade Mountain Range in the Pacific Northwest. Deep ocean trenches, plunging thousands of meters below sea level, mark the exact boundary where the descending plate makes its fatal plunge.
STOP & JOT CHECKPOINT #2: TRANSLATE TO PLAIN ENGLISH Fix-Up Tool 4
Complete this stem in your head: "When ocean rock meets land rock, the heavy ocean rock ______ because ______." If confused, back up 2 sentences and use your hands to model the collision.
4 Friction Lock: The Mechanics of Earthquakes
Lines 47–62
Not all plates collide head-on. At transform boundaries, such as California's famous San Andreas Fault, two plates slide horizontally past each other in opposite directions. However, tectonic rock faces are not smooth like glass; they are jagged, rough, and fractured. As the plates attempt to slip past each other, their jagged edges catch and snag, creating an agonizing state known as friction lock.
Although the plates are snagged solid, the deep convective engine below keeps pushing them relentlessly forward. For decades or even centuries, elastic strain accumulates in the locked rock, like a rubber band stretched to its absolute breaking limit. When the stored stress finally exceeds the rock's physical strength, the fault ruptures catastrophically in a matter of seconds. The released kinetic energy radiates outward through the crust as destructive seismic waves, shaking cities and cracking highways.
SIGNAL FLARE: Concept Anchor
Friction Lock: Two rough surfaces stuck together while a pushing force builds behind them until it violently snaps.
Seismic Waves: Massive ripples of shock energy traveling through solid rock, experienced on the surface as an earthquake.
FINAL STOP & JOT CHECKPOINT #3: FULL RETRIEVAL Target Achieved
Now switch directly to your Stop Jot Fix Worksheet. Transfer your notes from the checkpoints, record the fix-up tools you used, and write your restored 2-sentence summary.
