The student will identify and apply QAR strategies (Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me, On My Own) to improve reading comprehension and demonstrate improved prosody.

Activate prior knowledge and build rapport.
Discuss favorite soccer players/teams. Explain that today we are "Soccer Detectives" using tools to uncover details in stories.

Use the Strategy Guide to explain: Right There (easy to spot), Think and Search (pass the ball between clues), Author and Me (text + brain), and On My Own (mostly brain).

Where Do Answers Come From?
When you read, sometimes answers are easy to find, and sometimes you have to think!
Today, we're learning a secret strategy called QAR:
It helps us be amazing reading detectives!
1. Right There!
"The Easy Goal"
The answer is right there in the story!
Easy to find , like spotting a ball on the grass.
Clue
Words from the question are usually in the same sentence as the answer.
Let's Try It:
"The soccer game was on Saturday."
Question: When was the soccer game?
Answer: Saturday.
2. Think and Search!
"The Team Play"
Look for clues in different parts of the story!
You have to put pieces together , like a coach planning a play.
Clue
The answer is in the text, but not in one place. Pass the ball between clues!
Let's Try It:
"David scored two goals. Maria scored one goal."
Question: How many goals did the team score?
Answer: Three goals.
3. Author and Me!
"The Coach's Strategy"
The author gives you clues, and you add what you know!
Use the text PLUS what's in your head.
Clue
The answer is not all in the story. You are the final piece of the puzzle!
Let's Try It:
"The player was breathing hard after the game."
Question: How does the player feel?
Answer: Tired/Exhausted.
4. On My Own!
"The Freestyle Move"
The answer is mostly in your head !
It's about your experiences and opinions .
Clue
You can answer this even without reading the story! It's your soccer move.

Becoming a great reader is like being a super detective! Use these tools to find clues and understand stories. QAR stands for Question-Answer Relationship .

Right There!
Where: The answer is in the story, usually in one sentence!
"It's like spotting the goal on the field."
EXAMPLE
Text: "The Lions, wearing red jerseys, ran onto the field."
Q: What color jerseys did they wear? A: Red.
CLUE
The words in the question match the words in the text.

Think and Search!
Where: The answer is in the text, but not in one place. Put pieces together!
"It's like passing the ball between teammates to score."
EXAMPLE
Text: "Maya scored one goal. Sam scored two goals."
Q: How many goals total? A: Three goals.
CLUE
You might need to read 2 or 3 sentences to find the whole answer.

Author and Me!
Where: Use the clues the author gives PLUS what you already know!
"It's like a coach deciding a play based on the game."
EXAMPLE
Text: "His legs felt heavy and he was breathing hard."
Q: Why was he subbed? A: He was tired.
CLUE
The answer is NOT all in the story. You add your smarts!

On My Own!
Where: The answer is mostly in YOUR head!
"It's like dreaming up your own amazing soccer move."
EXAMPLE
Text: "The crowd roared as she dribbled down the field."
Q: What is your favorite part of soccer? A: (Your opinion!)
CLUE
You could answer this without reading the story at all!

Passage 1
The Golden Goal
Leo loved soccer more than anything. Every Saturday, he put on his bright blue jersey and cleats, ready to play with his team, the Blue Blazes. Today was the championship game against the speedy Green Hornets. The score was tied 1-1 with only five minutes left to play.
Leo got the ball near midfield. He dribbled past one defender, then another. His heart pounded. He saw his teammate, Maria, open on the wing and passed her the ball. Maria sprinted down the sideline, then crossed it back to Leo, who was now in front of the goal!
With a powerful kick, the ball soared past the goalie and into the net! The referee blew the whistle. The crowd cheered loudly. The Blue Blazes had won!
Passage 2
Practice Makes Perfect
Coach Ben always said, "Practice makes perfect!" Maya, the captain of the United Dragons, knew this was true. She arrived at practice early every Tuesday and Thursday, even when it was raining. She spent extra time practicing her corner kicks and penalty shots. Her teammates sometimes complained about the tough drills, but Maya reminded them, "Every touch of the ball makes us stronger!"
One afternoon, during a difficult passing drill, Maya noticed her teammate, Alex, looking frustrated. Alex kept missing his passes. Maya walked over to him. "Hey, Alex," she said softly, "don't worry about missing. It happens to everyone. Just focus on aiming for a spot, not just kicking the ball."
Alex took a deep breath, tried again, and this time, his pass was perfect. Maya smiled. They both knew that helping each other was just as important as practicing their skills.

Phase 1: Warm-Up (5m) HOOK
"Hey [Student's Name]! Welcome! I'm so excited for our reading session today. Before we dive into some awesome soccer stories, tell me, what's your favorite soccer team or player?"
"Awesome choice! What makes them so great to watch? What do you love about how they play?"
"Fantastic! You know, being a great soccer player means understanding the game. Well, being a great reader is a lot like that! Today, we're going to become super soccer detectives."
Phase 2: Strategy Intro (7m) DIRECT INSTRUCTION
Action: Point to the QAR Strategy Guide and Slides.
"Let's look at our tools! First, Right There . This is like finding a ball right on the field – easy to spot! The answer is in one sentence. Next, Think and Search . This is like passing the ball. You have to look in different places and put pieces together."
"Then, Author and Me . Like a coach making a play – using the game clues PLUS your brain. And finally, On My Own . Mostly in your head! You can answer even without the story."
Phase 3: Guided Practice (10m) PRACTICE 1
"Let's put these tools to work with 'The Golden Goal'. Listen to it using text-to-speech first. Follow along with your finger."
Action: Use the QAR Activity Sheet. Read Q1 aloud.
"Which kind of question is this? Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me, or On My Own?"
Phase 4: Independent & Prosody (5m) PRACTICE 2
"Now, read 'Practice Makes Perfect' aloud. Try to make it sound interesting, like you're telling a story! I'll listen for your expression."
Note: Give positive feedback on prosody (voice pitch, pauses, excitement).
Phase 5: Cool Down (3m) REFLECTION
"Which strategy was easiest today? Which was a challenge? I'm really proud of your detective work today!"
