Operation Keywords Decoder
A structured, high-contrast lesson to help students identify operational word-problem keywords using whiteboard activities and a color-by-keyword mystery picture worksheet.
Activity 1: Whiteboard Warm-up
Time: 15–20 Minutes | Interactive Whole-Group
- Draw 4 Boxes: Sketch four large quadrant boxes on the whiteboard. Label them only after asking students to name the 4 basic operations (+, −, ×, ÷).
- Student Brainstorm: Go box-by-box. Ask students to shout out or write on the board any words they associate with that operation.
- Fill the Gaps: When student answers slow down, use the Master Word Bank on the right to supply additional academic and word-problem keywords.
- Copy to Guided Notes: Instruct students to copy the final compiled lists from the board onto their personal Guided Notes page.
Activity 2: Keyword Mystery
Time: 20–25 Minutes | Independent / Small Group
- Introduce Coloring: Explain that although the worksheet prints in black and white, students will use colored pencils or crayons to color each box to reveal a mystery shape.
- Use Guided Notes: Students read the keyword in a grid box, find it on their Guided Notes page, and match it to its operational color.
- Color the Grid: Apply colors corresponding to the active code (Red, Yellow, Green, Blue) to unlock the secret image.
Special Ed Accommodations
- Choral Identification: Read out keywords together as a group and decide the color before coloring begins.
- Physical Markers: For students with fine motor challenges, let them make a simple colored dot in the box rather than filling it completely.
- Modified Load: Have students complete only the center diamond (Multiplication and Division words) to verify understanding.
Master Keyword Bank
Use these to prompt students and fill any empty board spaces.

Color-by-Code Answer Key
Verify student coloring choices on the keyword mystery grid. Correct entries form a clean pixelated math diamond.

ADDITION (+) RED
SUBTRACTION (−) YELLOW
MULTIPLICATION (×) GREEN
DIVISION (÷) BLUE
Classroom Guide
The finished layout reveals a cool-colored core diamond (Green and Blue cells) against a warm-colored background (Red and Yellow cells).
- Check for symmetry to spot misplaced keywords.
- Ensure words like "each" are categorized correctly under multiplication (finding a total) or division (sharing).
Grading Metric
Grade on classification correctness rather than coloring neatness. Allow flexibility for sensory/motor adjustments in coloring style.
