Scripted Lesson Timeline

Warm-Up: Interactive Board Setup
Draw 4 large, empty colored squares on the main classroom blackboard/whiteboard. Label them with the symbols: + , − , × , and ÷ .
Script: "Good morning, math decoders! Every math word problem contains a secret code. Today, we are going to learn how to decode these secrets using clues!"

Direct Instruction (I Do, We Do): The 8 Clues
Pass out the Decoder Desk Anchor Charts and Decoder Training Worksheet .
I Do (Notes): Guide students to draw a giant + symbol inside the Addition box, and write the symbol inside the others as a class.
I Do (Modeling): Read the "Teacher Model (I Do)" sticker word problem out loud. Model pointing to the keyword left on the anchor chart, finding Subtraction, and writing the − sign.
We Do (Guided): Read the "Guided Practice (We Do)" problem out loud. Call on students to identify the keyword: groups of. Help students write it in their worksheet.

Active Drill: Whiteboard Raiders
Hand out dry-erase markers and individual whiteboards. Read from the Task Cards on Page 2 .
Script: "I will read a secret case. Your job is to search your Desk Anchor Chart, write down the ONE keyword on your whiteboard, and draw the matching math sign underneath. When I count to three, hold up your board!"
