Lesson 1 Objective
Students will learn the CUBES strategy steps and apply them to decompose and solve single-step addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problems within a structured graphic organizer.

Facilitation & Scripting Steps
1. Direct Instruction / Hook (10 Mins)
Introduce CUBES using the Anchor Chart. Present word problems as math mysteries. Explain that a math detective never guesses; they unpack clues first.
Teacher Script: "Math word problems can look scary because of all the words. But today, we are getting a decoder ring! It's called CUBES. Our job isn't to look at the numbers and guess 'add' or 'subtract.' Our job is to follow the 5 steps of CUBES to isolate the truth."
2. Modeling CUBES Steps (15 Mins)
Model solving a 1-step problem (e.g., "Leo has 28 baseball cards. He buys 15 more. How many cards does he have in all?"). Guide students through C, U, B, E, and S explicitly, writing the results on the board within the 1-Step Organizer template.
- C: Circle 28 baseball cards and 15 baseball cards.
- U: Underline How many cards does he have in all?
- B: Box in all (indicates addition).
- E: Eliminate extra words. Estimate: \(30 + 15 = 45\).
- S: Solve inside workspace and check answer (\(28 + 15 = 43\)). Compare to estimate.
3. Guided Practice (15 Mins)
Have students complete Problem #1 on the Intervention Worksheet in pairs. Focus on completion of the graphic organizer (identifying keys, writing the final answer sentence frame) rather than just getting the numeric solution.
Common Misconception
Students box key terms blindly without reading context. For example, assuming "more" always means addition, even in comparison subtraction problems (e.g., "how many more does he have?"). Model the difference carefully.
Intervention Strategy
For students struggling with spelling or reading, allow verbalizing the keys while the teacher highlights, and use the sentence frames in the worksheet to reduce cognitive load on handwriting.

Lesson 2 Objective

Facilitation & Scripting Steps
1. Warm-Up & Hook: The Hidden Question (10 Mins)
Write a 2-step problem (e.g., "Mina buys 3 packs of gum. Each pack has 5 pieces. She gives away 4 pieces. How many does she have left?"). Ask: "Can we subtract 4 pieces directly from 3 packs?" Emphasize we need an intermediate number first!
Teacher Script: "Some problems have a locked door. The main question is on the other side. To unlock that door, we first have to search for a hidden golden key—this is our 'hidden question'. We solve for the key in Step 1, then we can open the door in Step 2!"
2. Modeling the Double-Decker Map (15 Mins)
Introduce the Double-Decker Organizer. Model solving Mina's gum problem:
- Find keys & Box actions: Circle 3 packs, 5 pieces, 4 pieces. Box each (multiply) and left (subtract).
- Define the Hidden Question: "How many total pieces of gum did she start with?"
- Step 1 Block: Solve the hidden question: \(3 \times 5 = 15\) pieces.
- Step 2 Block: Carry the 15 down to the next row. Solve the final question: \(15 - 4 = 11\) pieces.
3. Guided Practice & Partners (15 Mins)
Distribute Lesson 2 Intervention Worksheet. Walk the room to check that students are carrying their Step 1 solution down into the Step 2 formula box. Emphasize that the result of Step 1 is NOT the final answer!
Common Misconception
The Halfway Stop: Students complete Step 1 (e.g., finding she has 15 pieces of gum) and immediately write "15" as their final answer, completely forgetting about the second half of the problem. Emphasize the second deck of the organizer.
Intervention Strategy
Use physical color highlighter flow lines. Highlight the "Step 1 Answer" box and draw an arrow directly to the first input slot of "Step 2 Block" with the same highlighter color to make the linkage explicit.

Teacher Script: "Today, we reach the highest peak—the 3-Step Summit. These are the hardest problems on standard state tests, but guess what? They are just three tiny 1-step problems wearing a trench coat! If we solve them step-by-step, they are easy."
2. Modeling 3-Step Summation (15 Mins)
Model modeling: "Toby bought 2 notebooks for $4 each, and 3 pens for $2 each. He paid with a $20 bill. How much change did Toby get?"
- Step 1: Find notebooks cost (\(2 \times \$4 = \$8\)).
- Step 2: Find pens cost (\(3 \times \$2 = \$6\)). Carry forward both answers: Total spent is \(\$8 + \$6 = \$14\).
- Step 3: Carry 14 down. Calculate change: \(\$20 - \$14 = \$6\). Summit reached!
3. Station Practice & Task Cards (15 Mins)
Set up the Differentiated Task Card Station around the room:
- Green Cards: 1-Step (Guided Intervention & reinforcing confidence).
- Blue Cards: 2-Step (Target level for standard practice).
- Orange Cards: 3-Step (Enrichment and Summit level challenges).

Common Misconception
Students lose the narrative flow in Step 2. They add unrelated numbers (e.g., adding pens count to notebooks price). Reinforce labeling every single numerical answer in the workspace with its unit noun (e.g. "$8 for notebooks").
Enrichment Guidance
For students who master 3-step problems quickly, challenge them to write their own 3-step problem featuring three different operations (e.g., multiplication, addition, subtraction) and swap with a peer.
