Arriving at School
Every morning, I walk into my classroom. There are lots of people moving around, talking, and getting ready for the day. Sometimes, the morning feels a little loud or busy .
I might feel happy to see my friends.
I might feel tired or a little grumpy.
It is okay to have "Big Feelings" in the morning. Everyone has them! But even when I have Big Feelings, I have the power to choose which words come out of my mouth.
Hero Tip:
When my feelings feel too big, I can stop, take one deep breath, and count to 5 before I say anything.

The Power of My Words
My words are like tools. I can use them to build people up, or I can use them to knock people down. Words like "I am going to throw you out the window" or other mean comments are Red Light Words .
Red Light Words...
Make my classmates feel scared or unsafe .
Make my teacher feel sad or worried about our classroom.
Can cause my friends to stay away from me.
Can get me into trouble and take away my morning fun.
Instead of Red Light Words, I can use Green Light Words . These are words that help others understand how I feel without hurting them.
Green Light Words...
"I am feeling frustrated right now. I need some space."
"Good morning! Can I join you in what you are doing?"
"I'm feeling a little grumpy this morning, but I'll be okay soon."
My Hero Action Plan
I can be a kind leader in the morning!
1. When I feel grumpy or annoyed in the morning, what is ONE thing I can do BEFORE I speak?
2. Draw or write a "Green Light Word" you can use tomorrow morning to be a hero:
"I promise to use my words to help, not to hurt. I am a Morning Words Hero!"

Morning Words Intervention (Grade 3)
Intervention Overview
This intervention is designed for students who struggle with verbal aggression or rude comments during the high-stimulation morning transition. It uses a hero-themed social story to reframe self-regulation as a "superpower" and provides concrete "Green Light" replacement phrases.
Step-by-Step Delivery
1
Introduce the Concept (Slides)
Use the Morning Hero Slides for a 1-on-1 discussion. Focus on identifying feelings like "tired," "loud," or "busy." Validate that these feelings are okay, but words like "throw you out the window" are "Red Light Words" that make people feel unsafe.
2
Personalize the Story (Document)
Work through the Morning Words Hero Document . Have the student sign the "Hero Signature" line. This creates a sense of ownership and commitment to the new "Green Light" habits.
3
Provide Visual Prompts (Cards)
Print and laminate the Morning Hero Reminder Cards . Tape them to the student's desk or inside their locker. Model how to point to a card or read a "Green Light" phrase when feeling frustrated.
Positive Reinforcement Strategy
Focus on "Catching them being a Hero." Give specific praise immediately when the student uses a Green Light Word or manages a transition quietly.
"I noticed you told your friend you needed space instead of using a Red Light Word. That was a Hero move! I feel much safer in our room when you use your words that way."
Progress Tracker
Use this simple log to track morning transitions over the next two weeks. Note if the student used Green Light Words or if Red Light Words occurred.

Troubleshooting
What if the student refuses to use Green Light Words?
Simplify the expectation. Start by praising them just for *not* using a Red Light Word (silence is a win). Gradually move toward verbal expression.
What if the environment is truly too loud?
Consider a "Soft Start" option where the student can enter 5 minutes early, or provide noise-canceling headphones as a "Hero Tool" while they settle in.
