Pillar 1: Define the Exact Destination
The Learning Goal
The Goal Anatomy
Who & When: Students will be able to...
Observable Action: Analyze, construct, calculate, justify...
Context & Criteria: By identifying 3 root causes using a diagram.
Vague & Unmeasurable
"Students will understand how ecosystems work."
Problem: You cannot observe or assess "understanding" directly.
Sharp & Measurable
"SWBAT trace energy transfer by constructing a 4-tiered food chain and explaining producer roles."
Observable action, specific product, clear criteria.
Rule of Thumb: If you cannot see it, hear it, or read it, it is not a learning goal. Cognitive Rigor = Bloom's Verbs
2
Pillar 2: Select the High-Yield Vehicle
Activity Alignment
I Do
Explicit Modeling
• Think-aloud of expert steps
• Visible exemplar breakdown
• Explicit naming of common traps
Teacher carries cognitive load
We Do
Guided Rehearsal
• Structured partner problem-solving
• Choral / white-board prompting
• Immediate feedback & calibration
Shared cognitive load
You Do
Independent Application
• Solo practice matching goal rigor
• Scaffolded release to fluency
• Generates hard student evidence
Student carries 100% of load
The Activity Trap: Avoid tasks just because they are "busy" or "fun." Every minute of student activity must directly rehearse the target skill.
3
Pillar 3: Inspect What You Expect
Checking for Understanding
The Illusion of Comprehension
"Does this make sense?" or "Any questions?"
Why it fails: Only confident voices speak; silence does not equal mastery.
The High-Yield Standard
Check 100% of students in under 60 seconds before moving forward in the lesson sequence.
3 Real-Time CFU Moves
1. Hinge Question / Finger Voting
Diagnostic MCQ where each distractor reveals a specific gap.
2. All-Write Whiteboards
Every student writes key step; simultaneous 3-2-1 reveal.
3. Daily 2-Minute Exit Ticket
1 to 2 questions strictly aligned to the goal. Sort into 3 piles.
Data collected during a lesson is medicine; data collected on a unit exam is an autopsy. Act on Data Instantly
Hands-On Practice: Mini-Blueprint
10 Minutes Total
Step A (3 mins)
The Exact Goal
Pick an upcoming skill. Write a measurable goal using the formula:
SWBAT [Action Verb] [Skill] by [Observable Evidence].
Check: Can a stranger grade this?
Step B (4 mins)
Aligned Activity
Outline your active practice:
• What model will you show? (I Do)
• What partner task rehearses it? (We Do)
• What do they produce solo? (You Do)
Check: Who does the thinking?
Step C (3 mins)
Check & Exit Ticket
Draft two formative checkpoints:
• 1 in-flight check (hinge/whiteboard)
• 1 targeted exit ticket question with answer key criteria
Check: Can you grade it in 30s?
Use Section 2 of your Lesson Architecture Handout to record your blueprint.
Timer: 10:00
Peer Tuning & Closing Takeaways
5 Minutes Debrief
2-Minute Peer Tuning Protocol
Partner A (60s): Pitch your goal and exit ticket.
Partner B (60s): Provide tuning feedback:
Is the goal 100% observable?
Does the exit ticket directly test the goal?
Switch Roles (120s): Repeat for Partner B.
The Golden Rule of Planning
"A lesson plan is not a schedule of what the teacher will do; it is an architecture for what the student will master."
Tomorrow's Commitment:
Write your exit ticket before designing your slides or activities. Let the destination drive the journey.

The 3-Pillar Backward Planning Reference Guide
Name:
Subject / Grade:
1 Pillar 1: The Actionable Learning Goal
Must be Observable
1. Target Audience
"Students will be able to..." (SWBAT) establishes the learner as the active agent.
2. Observable Action
Use precise verbs: differentiate, calculate, defend, draft, model, categorize .
3. Criteria & Context
Under what condition? With what proof? (e.g., using a rubric, with 80% accuracy).
Vague Goal (Avoid)
"Students will understand persuasive techniques."
Flaw: 'Understand' cannot be observed or consistently graded.
Rigorous Goal (Target)
"SWBAT identify ethos, pathos, and logos in an editorial and explain their rhetorical effect in 3 sentences."
Strength: Identifies concrete text, specific terms, and explicit output.
2 Pillar 2: High-Yield Learning Experiences
Cognitive Alignment
I DO (Direct Model)
Teacher makes implicit cognition explicit. Narrates decision-making, criteria, and pitfalls.
Check: 10-12 mins max
WE DO (Guided Practice)
Structured pairs, turn-and-talk with prompt, choral responses, slate drills with instant corrections.
Check: Error diagnosis
YOU DO (Solo Mastery)
Students independently produce the exact behavior required by the standard with zero scaffolding.
Check: Independent proof
3 Pillar 3: The Check for Understanding (CFU) Toolkit
Real-Time Evidence
Hinge-Point Question
Multiple-choice prompt placed at mid-lesson transition. Every wrong answer exposes a specific mental error.
Mini-Whiteboard Sweep
All students write step 2 simultaneously. "3, 2, 1, Reveal!" Allows 100% check in under 15 seconds.
2-Minute Exit Ticket
1-2 questions directly aligned to goal. Evaluated immediately into: Mastered (Green), Partial (Yellow), Remediation (Red).
The 4-Point Alignment Test (Quick Self-Check)
1. Measurable Verb: Is the goal observable by an outside observer?
2. Cognitive Fit: Does the activity require the exact rigor of the test?
3. 100% Participation: Does the CFU check all students, not just volunteers?
4. Actionable Data: Will the exit ticket tell you who needs help tomorrow?

Deliverable 1 Lesson Mini-Blueprint
Part 1: Instructional Delivery & Modeling (Minutes 00:00 – 18:00) Stick strictly to time-stamps
00:00 – 04:00 (4 min) Hook: The Backward Planning Paradigm
Slides 1 & 2
Trainer Script: "Most lesson planning starts with the question: 'What will I do tomorrow?' Today we flip that question permanently: 'What will students master, and what hard evidence will prove it?' If we haven't defined the destination, the prettiest activities only lead to confusion."
Key Facilitator Move: Ask room: "How many of you have planned a fun activity that yielded zero mastery?" (Heads will nod).
04:00 – 09:00 (5 min) Pillar 1: Anatomy of an Actionable Learning Goal
Slide 2
Instructional Focus: Ban the word "understand" in daily goals. Unpack the SWBAT formula: Action Verb + Skill + Condition/Criteria . Walk through the ecosystem exemplar on the slide.
Rapid Check: Call out 2 phrases: "Students will explore gravity" vs "Students will calculate terminal velocity." Have teachers vote Thumbs Up/Down on observability.
09:00 – 14:00 (5 min) Pillar 2: Choosing Aligned Activities
Slide 3
Instructional Focus: The Gradual Release model (I Do, We Do, You Do). Highlight the "Activity Trap": activities where students are compliant and busy, but never rehearse the actual cognitive demand of the standard.
Guiding Question: "Who is doing the heavy intellectual lifting during your independent practice—you or the students?"
14:00 – 18:00 (4 min) Pillar 3: Real-Time Checks for Understanding
Slide 4
Instructional Focus: Eliminate rhetorical checks ("Does everyone get it?"). Teach 2 active in-flight checks (hinge questions with diagnostic distractors, mini-whiteboard reveals) + the non-negotiable 2-minute Exit Ticket.
Core Principle: A valid exit ticket must take under 2 minutes for students to complete and under 5 minutes for the teacher to sort.
