Focus Battery Lesson Plan Executive Function & Interoception Curriculum
Focus Battery Station
Metacognitive Energy Regulation & Independent Work Initiation
Educator Master Guide Grades 4–6 SpEd
Format Direct + Stations
Duration 45 Min + 3m Daily
Core Domain Sensory Self-Advocacy
Tier Level Tier 2 & Tier 3 / IEP
Neurodiversity-Affirming Principle
Energy states are morally neutral —there are no “bad” battery levels. Students are guided to decode physiological feedback (heart rate, muscle tone, sensory processing) without shame, matching their immediate state with intentional sensory and regulatory accommodations before cognitive tasks.
IEP-Aligned Learning Objectives
Objective 1
Interoceptive Clues: Identify at least two physical body sensations (e.g., eye heaviness, tight shoulders, fluttery stomach).
Objective 2
Charge Rating: Accurately rate present internal mental/sensory battery charge across the 4-level focus scale.
Objective 3
Strategy Matching: Select and independently execute 1 targeted sensory regulation strategy prior to work initiation.
The Four Battery Zones: Signal & Strategy Matrix
Battery State & Visual
Body Sensors (Interoception)
Mind & Attention Clues
Target Sensory Response
Low Battery (15%)
Drained / Sluggish
Slumped spine, heavy eyelids, yawning, slow reaction.
Zoning out, delayed start, feeling spaced or foggy.
Alerting: Wall push, cold splash, peppermint scent, crisp stretch.
Ready Zone (50–70%)
Balanced / Steady
Smooth breathing, relaxed neck, comfortable eye contact.
Clear attention, ready to start, calm confidence.
Maintain: Desk clear, task visual list, gentle focus timer.
Buzzing (85%)
Restless / Revved
Bouncing feet, fidgety fingers, fast talking, tight chest.
Impulsive clicks, jumping between tasks, rushing.
Proprioception: Resistance bands, chair push-ups, heavy lap pad.
Overloaded (100%+)
Surging / Flooded
Clenched jaw/fists, rapid pulse, noise sensitivity, hot face.
Sensory overwhelm, fight-flight impulses, shut down.
Down-Regulation: Sound-muffling ear defenders, 4-7-8 breathing, dim corner.

Protocol Guide
Step-by-Step Lesson Architecture (45 Minutes)
10 Min
Hook: The Smart Device Analogy & Body Scan
Display tablet at 3% battery and phone overheating. Prompt: “What happens when you force a device to run heavy apps on empty? What happens when it overheats?” Introduce internal body sensors: students rest hands on ribs and neck to notice breath and heart rate.
12 Min
Explicit Teaching: Decoding the Focus Battery Scale
Walk through the slide deck. Connect internal signals (heavy eyes vs. buzzing toes) to battery percentages. Teacher models authentic vulnerability: “Right now my battery is at 80% Buzzing because the morning was noisy. I need 3 chair push-ups before we start.”
15 Min
Active Station Rotation: Strategy Calibration Lab
Divide room into 4 stations: Station A (Alerting) , Station B (Focus Anchor) , Station C (Heavy Proprioception) , Station D (Sensory Reset) . Students trial 1 strategy from each station for 2 minutes and record body shifts on their Journal Mat.
8 Min
Launch Ritual & Independent Task Initiation
Establish the permanent daily 60-second transition routine: Check gauge → Slide desk battery arrow → Take 1 regulation tool → Open independent task. Students complete their day-1 reflection log.
Universal Design & IEP Differentiation Matrix
Non-Verbal / AAC Users
Color-coded peg or slider on desk battery scale.
Picture Exchange (PECS) icons for all 12 sensory tools.
Point-to-body scan mat with visual tactile icons.
Sensory Defensive
Offer tactile alternatives (velcro strip under desk instead of putty).
Noise-dampening earplugs during transition periods.
Zero-fragrance alerting options (air circulation fan).
Executive Dysfunction
Restrict choices to a curated “Rule of Two” options per state.
Visual sand timer (2-minute limit) for strategy use.
Direct physical transition cues (stand → stretch → sit).
IEP Progress Monitoring & Data Rubric (Weekly Score: 1–3)
Competency
Level 1 (Emerging)
Level 2 (Developing)
Level 3 (Independent)
Interoceptive Scan Requires verbal prompting to notice body state. Identifies state when prompted with visual scale. Initiates body check spontaneously prior to task.
Sensory Selection Chooses items randomly or as play items. Selects matching tool from restricted 2-item choice. Accurately matches tool to current battery state.
Work Transition Resists ending sensory tool use; delays work. Transitions to work within 2 minutes of strategy end. Returns tool and initiates work cleanly upon timer chime.

Your Hidden Superpower
Inside Body Sensors: Interoception
Heart & Breath
Is your pulse fast and pounding, or steady and calm? Is breathing shallow or deep?
Clue: Pace of internal motor
Muscles & Limbs
Are your hands fidgeting? Are legs bouncing? Are shoulders soft or clenched tight?
Clue: Physical motor tension
Brain Energy
Does thinking feel foggy and slow, buzzing and scattered, or sharp and clear?
Clue: Focus readiness
Rule 1: Your body always sends honest signals. There are no “wrong” feelings! Step 1: Notice

Battery Level 1 • 15%
Low Battery: Drained & Sluggish
Goal: Wake Up Gently
Inside Signals You Notice:
Eyelids feel heavy like lead weights
Slumping over desk or yawning repeatedly
Thoughts move slow like peanut butter
Hard to get started or open work
Top Alerting Strategies:
Wall Push-Ups: 5 firm presses against classroom wall
Cold Water Sip: Drink cold water or splash face
Sky Reaches: Reach tall to the ceiling, then shake out hands
Quick Reminder: Do not force your brain while empty—recharge first, then begin!
