Core Concept
Two Kinds of Fuel
How our brains take action
Inner Spark (Inside)
You do it for the feeling
You do it because it feels fun, relaxing, creative, or exciting. Nobody has to remind you!
Real Examples:
Gaming or drawing fan art
Practicing sports or dance moves
Outer Boost (Outside)
You do it for the result
You do it to earn a reward, reach a goal, help someone you care about, or avoid stress later.
Real Examples:
Finishing classwork to earn free time
Doing chores to get your allowance or phone
Quick Turn & Talk:
Which kind of fuel got you out of bed this morning?
Honest Reflection
What Drains Your Battery?
Normalizing the struggle
When you avoid a task, it does not mean you are lazy. It usually means your brain hit one of these 3 hurdles:
The Giant Mountain
The project looks too gigantic or confusing. You don't know where to start.
Brain: "This is too much."
The Boring Wall
The work feels dry, disconnected from your interests, or repetitive. Zero spark.
Brain: "Why do I care?"
The Fear of Stuck
You worry about making mistakes or feeling frustrated in front of peers.
Brain: "What if I fail?"
Key Rule: When an engine runs out of gas, we don't kick itโwe refuel it with the right tool.

Explicit Teacher Discussion Scripts & Reframing
Reframing Task Avoidance (Slide 3 Script):
"Class, whenever someone says, 'I just wasn't motivated,' what they usually mean is, 'My brain felt overwhelmed, bored, or afraid of getting stuck.' An engine doesn't start without gas, and your brain doesn't start without the right spark. Today we aren't judging the avoidanceโwe are diagnosing the roadblock."
Introducing the 2-Minute Micro-Step (Slide 4 Script):
"Your brain hates giant mountains. If I ask you to write a 5-page essay, your brain shuts down. But if I ask you to open your Chromebook and write the title, anyone can do that for 120 seconds. Once the car is rolling, staying in motion takes 80% less fuel. That's the micro-step secret."
Coaching Students Who Say "Nothing Motivates Me":
"I hear you. Schoolwork feels completely disconnected right now. Let's ignore school for a secondโtell me about what you played, watched, or did this weekend where nobody had to nag you. That's your engine. Now let's see how we can borrow that same fuel for class."
