Carla's Case Notes: Similarities
Meet the Twin Detectives! Carla and Cora own the Double Detective Agency. Carla wears a cool blue coat. She is an expert at finding clues that are alike.
"To solve any mystery," Carla explains, "we must compare the clues. This means we look closely to find every similarity between two objects."
Today, they are looking at two golden crowns. Carla looks at Crown A. Similarly, she studies Crown B. Both crowns have shiny blue gems on top. Likewise, both crowns have bright golden stars around the edge.

Cora's Case Notes: Differences
Carla's twin, Cora, wears a bright pink coat. Cora is an expert at looking for details that make things unique and separate from each other.
"To solve the mystery of the crowns," Cora points out, "we must also contrast them. This helps us spot every hidden difference between the two."
Cora checks the crowns. The real Crown A is very heavy. However, the fake Crown B is light as paper! Cora looks closer. Although both crowns look gold and sparkly, the fake crown's stars are made of cheap plastic instead of real silver.

What are Transitions? Transition words are clues that tell the reader how two thoughts go together. They either show that things are alike (Compare) or different (Contrast) !
COMPARE TRANSITIONS: Words that show matching clues
similarly
Definition:
Used to show that two ideas or actions are alike or happen in the same way.
Example: "Crown A is made of gold. Similarly , Crown B is yellow."
likewise
Definition:
Means "also" or "in a similar way." It adds a second matching clue.
Example: "Carla found some gems. Likewise , she spotted silver stars."
CONTRAST TRANSITIONS: Words that show differences
however
