Santiago is a young shepherd in Spain. His parents wanted him to become a priest, which would bring honor to his family. Instead, Santiago chose to become a shepherd. Why? Because he had a deep desire to travel, and shepherding allowed him to wander across Andalusia's countryside.
"It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting," Santiago thinks. He loves his sheep, but he also notices that his sheep are content with only food and water. Unlike Santiago, they do not care about seeing new cities or chasing a grand purpose.
