Course Manifesto
Science helps us observe and measure our changing world. Literature helps us understand and communicate its beauty and threats. TerraScribe is an engaging interdisciplinary elective designed for 9th and 10th graders eager to connect scientific ideas with powerful reading and writing. In this class, we examine how writers use biological and earth science concepts to build arguments and capture our imagination. By reading accessible science classics, exploring ecosystem dynamics, and practicing persuasive speech and writing, you will learn to speak up for our environment with clarity, creativity, and authority.
Core Pillars of Inquiry
1. Science Stories
Analyzing environmental memoirs, essays, and reports. Breaking down how authors use imagery, tone, and characterization in science narratives.
2. Text Decoding
Learning strategies to unpack complex data charts, diagrams, and biological vocabulary without feeling overwhelmed by technical jargon.
3. Eco-Persuasion
Using rhetorical tools (ethos, pathos, logos) to write persuasive campaigns, letters, and speeches that address local environmental issues.
Semester 1: Earth, Ecology & Rhetoric
Unit 1: The Voice of the Land & Rachel's Warning
Weeks 1–6
How do we tell stories that protect the environment? We begin by reading selected excerpts from Aldo Leopold’s nature essays and Rachel Carson's groundbreaking Silent Spring . Students will study how Carson used emotional storytelling alongside biology facts to spark a nationwide environmental movement.

Unit 2: Earth Changing & Narrative Reporting
Weeks 7–12
How do writers capture geological shifts and global challenges? We will read contemporary science journalism covering biodiversity loss and ice-sheet research. Students will analyze how science reporters turn climate data into compelling human-interest stories that prompt direct community awareness.

Semester 2: Genomes, Systems & Public Action
Unit 3: Editing Nature: Genetics & Bioethics
Weeks 13–18
Who owns the code of life? In this unit, we shift to molecular biology and bioethics, focusing on genetic modification. Students will investigate the public discourse around gene-editing technologies. We analyze how scientists use analogies (like "editing a recipe") to explain gene systems to the general public.

Unit 4: Braiding Science & Community Voices
Weeks 19–24
How can we combine scientific observation with community wisdom? We explore plant ecology and botany through Robin Wall Kimmerer's accessible blend of science and narrative, alongside local environmental plans. Students apply their literacy toolkit to construct a school-wide ecological advocacy display.

Precision & Honesty: Representing data or scientific sources accurately is vital. Misrepresenting facts is treated as a major integrity issue.
Peer Review: We share drafts often. Feedback should be respectful, specific, and focused on helping your partner communicate clearly.
Growth Mindset: Writing is revision. Expect to draft, revise, and refine your science pieces to make them truly powerful.
Materials Needed Daily
A dedicated bound Field Notebook (ruled or grid), highlighters of 3 colors (for marking: main claims, science evidence, and style tools), and a physical ring folder for class handouts. Digital readings will be accessible via our school learning portal.
