Vowel Shifts in the Workplace
A reference guide for professional spelling, pronunciation, and clarity.
Module 01: Core Vowels
Name:
Date:
The Silent 'E' Shift (CVC to CVCe)
Adding a silent e to the end of a word changes the preceding vowel from a short (lax) vowel sound to a long (tense) vowel sound. The long vowel "says its own name."
Short Vowels (CVC)
plan /plæn/
Mouth is open and relaxed. The vocal muscles have low tension.
Long Vowels (CVCe)
plane /pleɪn/
Mouth changes shape (glides). The vocal muscles are tensed.
Workplace Minimal Pairs
| Short Vowel (CVC) | Long Vowel (CVCe) | Professional Application Scenario |
|---|
| ˘ plan | ¯ plane | "We need a project plan before boarding the plane." |
| ˘ quit | ¯ quite | "Do not quit yet; we are quite close to hitting our target." |
| ˘ scrap | ¯ scrape | "Recycle that metal scrap, and avoid a scrape on the machine." |
| ˘ hop | ¯ hope | "Let's hop on a quick Zoom call; I hope we can resolve this." |
| ˘ cut | ¯ cute | "We should cut the redundant logo; a simple card is more cute." |
Mouth Mechanics
- Lax (Short): Keep your lips, tongue, and jaw soft and passive. Lower the jaw slightly.
- Tense (Long): Actively stretch the sides of your mouth (like a smile for long /eɪ/ in "plane").
- Vowel Glide: Long vowels are often diphthongs; they transition from one sound to another.
Syllable Division Rule
- Closed Syllable: Ends in a consonant, making the vowel short (e.g., con-tact, man-age).
- Open Syllable: Ends in a vowel, making the vowel long (e.g., pro-tect, re-port).
- Use this to predict pronunciation in multisyllabic terms.

The Sound Architecture
Consonants can bond in two ways. Understanding this distinction makes spelling and pronunciation highly predictable.
1. Consonant Blends
st • fl • str • cl
Two or three letters blend together, but you can still hear each individual letter's sound (e.g., st-op, fl-at).
2. Consonant Digraphs
sh • ch • th • wh • ph
Two letters join together to create one completely new sound (e.g., sh-ip, ch-ip, ph-one).
The Sound Contrast
Practice comparing these minimal-pair configurations to isolate the sounds.
| Blend Pattern (Both Sounds) | Digraph Pattern (One New Sound) | Check Oral Mastery |
|---|
| sl- slip | sh- ship | "The cargo slip was left on the ship." |
| fl- flat | ch- chat | "We had a short, flat online chat." |
| tr- trust | th- think | "I think we should build professional trust." |
| cl- clean | ph- phone | "Wipe down your phone to make it clean." |
