Systemic Disparities: The U.S. Justice System
Just like Aunt Jennifer is trapped by rules in her marriage, many people face systemic restrictions in the real world. In the United States, the criminal justice system (police, courts, prisons) has large disparities . A disparity means a major difference that is unfair. Research shows that systemic bias (unfair treatment built into laws and rules) causes Black and Hispanic Americans to be arrested and imprisoned at much higher rates than White Americans.
Disparity / Disparidad: A large, unfair inequality or difference.
Systemic Bias / Sesgo Sistémico: Unfair treatment in rules/laws.
Reading the Data: Who is in Prison?
U.S. Demographics vs. Incarceration
White Americans 60% of US Pop • 30% of Prison Pop
US Pop:
60%
In Prison:
30%
Black Americans 12% of US Pop • 33% of Prison Pop (3x higher!)
US Pop:
12%
In Prison:
33%
Data Interpretation Questions
1. Look at Black Americans. Compare their share of the total US population (12%) to their share of the prison population (33%). What do you notice?
The data shows that Black Americans make up only 12% of the US population, but they
make up _______________ % of the prison population. This is a massive disparity.
2. Why is this data an example of systemic restriction ?
This data represents systemic restriction because _____________________________________
