1 Direct Instruction: Introducing the Color Clues (15 Mins)
Step 1: Set the Stage (Multi-Sensory Hook)
"Class, today we are going on a Color Clue Quest! Words have meaning, but they also have colors that can help our brains remember them. When we see a word, its color will show us its definition clue!"
Step 2: Explicit Instruction Script
- Bold (Rose Red): "Look at this card. The word is BOLD. It is in Rose Red. Red is the color of fire and brave superheroes. Bold means being brave and daring."
- Vast (Sky Blue): "This word is VAST. It is in Sky Blue. Sky Blue is the color of the huge ocean and the giant sky. Vast means very, very large."
- Swift (Amber Yellow): "This word is SWIFT. It is in Amber Yellow, like lightning. Lightning moves incredibly fast! Swift means moving very fast."

Explicit Instruction Script (Continued)
- Sly (Purple): "This word is SLY. It is in Purple, like a sneaky shadow. A fox is sly! Sly means being sneaky and clever."
- Gloom (Slate Gray): "This word is GLOOM. It is in Slate Gray, like a rainy, dark cloud. Gloom means darkness or a dim place."
Step 3: Guided Practice (Choral Response & Air Writing)
- Hold up the colored vocabulary cards. Have students say the word and its color together.
- Instruct: "If the word is SWIFT, point to the sky or run your finger fast like lightning in the air! What does SWIFT mean?"
- Promote visual retrieval: "When you see Rose Red, what brave word comes to mind?"

Tracking the 80% Goal
To meet the IEP/Instructional objective, the student must answer at least 4 out of 5 questions correctly during the independent tracking phase.
Scoring Key:
3/5 = 60% 4/5 = 80% (Goal) 5/5 = 100%
Accommodation Best Practices
Prompt Fading Strategy
As the student masters the connections, transition from colored practice sheets to monochrome versions or fold the color keys. This ensures independence.
Reducing Cognitive Load
All student materials maintain a strict 2-choice limit. This reduces processing time and increases confidence for reluctant responders.
