An evidence-based self-regulation and social-emotional intervention sequence themed around tactical secret-agent training, teaching grade 4-5 students physical and emotional boundary management.
Session Met Goal? (Min 4/5 YES): [ ] YES [ ] NO Success Rate: ________ %
Code Reference: None: Complete independence. Gesture: Teacher holds hands out or points to boundary. Verbal: Teacher says "check your bubble". Physical: Gently guiding student to walk back (high-prompt state).

Reset Card
"Engine warning detected. Let's do a co-regulated Tactical Ventilation breath together."
2
The Desktop Visual Reminder (Medium Support):
Place a System Reset Tracker Card on the top-right of the student's desk. Tap the card silently when you observe warning signs. The student selects deep breaths or a break independently.
3
The Post-Reset Verification (Low Support):
Once the student is using the strategy independently, check in only after they complete a task: "Great job resetting your system during that tough spelling list. You did a great job returning to finish."
Crucial Instruction Rules
Never force a strategy during Red Light:
If the student has reached a complete meltdown (screaming, tearing paper), do not prompt breathing. Prompting verbal regulation during high arousal increases frustration. Simply say: "Your engine is very hot. Let's stand up and cool down safely in the break zone."
Reinforce "Continuing the Task":
The core goal is Emotional Regulation + Continuation. A break or breathing is only successful if they return and complete at least one item. If they struggle to return, shorten the return requirement to a single, micro-step (e.g., "Write just one word, then we're done").
Data Collection Methodology
To verify IEP goal mastery (3 out of 5 observed instances), capture authentic data during typical academic frustration windows (e.g., independent math, timed spelling, editing drafts):
Defining an "Opportunity"
An opportunity occurs when a task triggers noticeable frustration warning signs (heavier breathing, grunting, pencil tapping, stalling). Document whether they activated a protocol within 30 seconds of the trigger.
Defining a "Success"
A trial is marked "Yes" only if they: (1) apply the reset strategy with minimal/no prompting, (2) return to baseline, and (3) continue/complete the academic work.

😮💨 Heavy Breathing
😬 Clenched Jaw
✍️ Hard Pencil Grip
🧠 Angry Thoughts
🥺 Teary Eyes
Step 2: System Calibration Plan
1. Think of a school task that makes your engine feel the hottest. What is it, and what does it feel like?
2. When your warning lights start to blink, do you prefer using Tactical Ventilation (breathing) or System Offline (break)? Explain why.
3. How can you break down a highly frustrating problem into 3 tiny steps to run a Task Override?

Scenario 6 📖
The Reading Marathon
The Trigger: The reading assignment is 4 pages long, and you feel tired and start frowning. Mission: Notice your frowning. Drop shoulders. Use a bookmark to cover pages 2-4 and focus entirely on completing just Page 1.

Session Met Goal? (Min 3/5 YES): [ ] YES [ ] NO Success Rate: ________ %
Success Verification: Both elements must occur: student must use a strategy and return to continue the task. Mark "NO" if they use a strategy but refuse to resume work, or if they continue work but had a full meltdown first.

Use during initial skill training. Say: "Your steam dial looks high. Open your breathing valve now." (Mark trial as prompted/unsuccessful for IEP independence criteria).
2
Visual Pointer/Card Tap (Medium Prompt):
Fading verbal cues. Tap the student's "Pressure Card" attached to their desk without speaking. Allow 10 seconds for them to self-initiate.
3
Proximity and Expectant Delay (Low Prompt):
Stand within 3-4 feet of the student's workspace when frustration is detected. Look expectantly at them, but offer no verbal or direct physical prompts. Monitor self-initiation.
Crucial Outburst De-escalation Rules
The Sadness Response:
When students exhibit crying or heavy head-down posture, respect their boundaries. Offer a dry erase sheet to communicate instead of forcing verbal speech. Say: "Your steam is venting right now. Write down what you need when you're ready."
The Explosive Outburst Rule:
If containment fails and an outburst occurs, immediately prioritize safety. Do not attempt to process the event or teach strategies while the student is in a highly reactive state. Debrief only once they are at baseline for 10+ minutes.
Data Collection & Coding
To verify IEP goal mastery (4 out of 5 independent opportunities), document instances where pressure builds (changes in routine, hard tasks, minor peer disputes):
Opportunity Criteria
The student is exposed to a known frustration trigger or exhibits overt yellow-light cues (pacing, heavy sighs, head down, grunting). Outburst has not yet occurred.
Independence Score Criteria
Mark as "YES" only if they initiate a strategy without verbal coaching or physical gesture prompts. The strategy must successfully avert the outburst or crying.

Optimal Cool
Calm chest, relaxed breathing, clear mind. No action needed.
LEVEL 3
Warm Pressure
Heavy sighs, frowning, throat clearing. Open breathing valve.
LEVEL 4
High Steam
Clenched jaw, tight chest, watery eyes. Open break valve!
LEVEL 5
Meltdown
Outburst, screaming, crying. High risk state. Requires safe space.
Step 2: System Calibration Plan
1. What is an event or action at school that quickly fills your internal chamber with steam?
2. What are 2 physical "steam leaks" (like clenched fists or heavy sighs) that alert you your steam dial has reached Level 3 or 4?
3. How will you remember to open your pressure valves completely on your own, without a teacher reminding you?

Mission:
Strategy: Muscle Release + Fold paper Goal: Prevent teary breakdown
Scenario 6 💬
The Constant Interruption
The Trigger: You are telling a peer a story, but they keep talking over you. You feel angry steam rising. Mission: Stop talking. Squeeze your hands, take a long, slow Steam Release breath, and say, "Let me finish my sentence first, then you can talk."

Independent Score Criteria: Only mark as "YES" if the student activated their valve (such as doing tactical exhales or silent card breaks) with "None" prompt level, and avoided the outburst or sadness. If you had to verbally prompt, mark as "NO".
