Step-by-Step Lesson Flow
STEP 1
Visual Connection Check-In
5-8 Minutes
Gather students on the perimeter of the circle. Position yourself at eye level with the group. Establish a consistent, low-arousal greeting ritual to ease anxiety.
Circle Routine
Pass a soft sensory toy. Introduce names. "I am in our safe circle today. My name is [Name]."
Visual Choice Check-In
Have students touch or point to an emotion symbol (Happy, Tired, Anxious, Calmed) on their desk cards.
STEP 2
Guided Social Narrative Reading
10 Minutes
Present the Safe Circle Story document. Read with flat, calm inflection. Keep pause durations predictable (3-second pauses between key pages).

Before completing the lesson, sit briefly with each individual student. Point to the Helpers Board and ask: "If you need help, who can you ask?" Monitor if the student can point to, eye-gaze toward, or hand you the Helper Icon. Document the level of prompting required (Independent, Visual Prompt, Gestural Prompt, or Full Physical Support).
