Neurodiversity-Affirming Mindset: Task Freeze ≠ Non-Compliance
Neurodivergent students with ADHD, autism, or executive dysfunction frequently freeze before multi-step tasks due to working memory saturation. When an instruction sounds like "Write a three-paragraph report," the brain perceives hundreds of micro-decisions at once. The Chunk & Conquer method externalizes the working memory load onto physical strips, shrinking the threat to one immediate, low-stakes physical action.
1
Phase 1: The Hook & The Monster Trap (10 Min)
Teacher Action: Hold up a giant, chaotic card reading: "CLEAN YOUR ENTIRE DESK AND COMPLETE THE CHAPTER 4 ESSAY RIGHT NOW." Ask students: "How does your body feel when someone dumps a giant task like this on you?"
The Freeze: Brain stalls; staring into space; unable to write word one.
The Scramble: Sharpening pencils 6 times; organizing markers; avoiding start.
The Secret: It's not laziness! The task is just wearing a giant monster mask.
2
Phase 2: The 3 Golden Strip Rules (12 Min)
Rule 1: One Verb Only
Never write "Read and answer questions." Break it down: Strip A = "Find page 42" ; Strip B = "Read question 1" .
Rule 2: Under 8 Minutes
If a strip takes longer than a short song or sand timer run, it is still too big. Cut the strip in half!
Rule 3: Visual Finish Line
Every strip has a checkbox and gets folded or snapped into the "Done Zone" to trigger immediate dopamine.

Phase 3: Guided Practice • Dismantling the Monster Project (10 Min)
Display the sample monster assignment: "Create a State Animal Poster." Walk students through slicing it into 4 color-coded strips:
Strip 1: Scout (Blue)
"Pick animal & place poster board on desk."
Strip 2: Bite (Amber)
"Write title at the top in big bubble letters."
Strip 3: Fuel (Purple)
"Write 2 animal food facts with bullet points."
Strip 4: Polish (Green)
"Glue the animal photo and write your name."
4
Phase 4: Independent Task Dismantler Studio (15 Min)
Tier 1: Starter Duo
Students with moderate EF support work with pre-filled verb bank and 3 strips to dismantle today's math or reading task.
Tier 2: Co-Pilot Support
Teacher or peer scribes step descriptions onto strip cutouts while student narrates their smallest doable first move.
Sensory Check-In
Provide tactile strip rings, colorful binder clips, or sticky note flags to physicalize each completed strip.
5
Phase 5: The 2-Minute Launch Drill & Runway Debrief (8 Min)
The Ignition Protocol: Place ONLY Strip #1 on the desk pad. Hide Strips 2–4 inside the "Launchpad Envelope." Set a visible 2-minute countdown timer.
"When the 2 minutes end, the freeze is broken! Rip or check your strip, slide it into the Done Runway, and celebrate your first victory."
Neurodiversity-Affirming Accommodations
For High Anxiety / Demand Avoidance:
Allow Strip #1 to be purely sensory prep (e.g., "Choose my favorite pen" or "Take 3 box breaths") to ensure a guaranteed 100% success rate.
For Hyperfocus / Resistance to Stopping:
Use dual timers: a 1-minute warning chime before a strip transition and an optional "Keep Momentum" token if rolling smoothly.
Daily Classroom Integration Routine Transfer • Daily Habit
Keep a stack of blank Action Strips at the student supply hub. Before every independent work block, prompt: "Strip check: what is your one-verb first move?" Students tape their strip to the top edge of their desk to anchor attention.

Brain Science Fact
The Overwhelmed Brain
"Write your big report!"
Your brain hears 100 hidden steps at once:
• Find pencil • Read rubric • Pick topic • Organize paper • Avoid mistakes
Result: Brain hits the emergency brake. You freeze!
The Studio Truth
You Are Not Lazy!
Task paralysis happens when a job is too huge to see where to start. Your working memory is simply overloaded.
The Fix: Shrink the monster into bite-sized strips!
When you can't start, don't push harder—make the first step smaller!

The Formula
The 3 Golden Strip Rules
Every Strip Must Pass All 3
1
One Single Verb
No "and" allowed! Only one physical action per strip.
Read & answer
→ "Open to page 12"
2
Under 8 Minutes
Shorted than one favorite song. Easy to finish in a flash!
If it feels big or slow,
→ Cut the strip in half!
3
Clear Finish Line
You know exactly when it is 100% finished. No guessing!
Check the box,
→ Slide strip to DONE!
Remember: Small steps build unstoppable momentum.

Skill Focus 🌱 Explorer With Co-Pilot Help 🛠 Builder Growing Independence ⚡ Crusher Consistent & Confident 🏆 Master Maker Adapts & Coaches 1. Task Deconstruction Slicing the monster task into manageable parts Sees the task as one giant wall; needs teacher to spot the first 2 pieces. Identifies big parts (e.g., "reading" and "writing") with guiding questions. Independently breaks assignment into 3–4 distinct sequential actions. Naturally separates setup, first micro-bite, core work, and polish steps. 2. Micro-Step Sizing 1 action verb and <8 min per strip Strips combine multiple verbs ("read page and answer 5 questions"). Strips have 1 verb, but time estimate is still over 10 minutes. Each strip has 1 clear physical verb and fits in a 5–8 min work sprint. Micro-steps are laser-focused; splits strip immediately if it feels heavy. 3. Launch Ignition Overcoming freeze within 2 minutes Stalls or enters avoidance loop (pencil sharpening, daydreaming) >5 min. Launches with a visual timer countdown or teacher countdown check-in. Docks Strip #1 and initiates physical work in <120 seconds on own. Recognizes brain freeze cue instantly, resets with Strip #1, and launches. 4. Progress & Advocacy Moving strips to runway & asking help Loses track of active strip; does not signal when stuck. Checks off strips with a prompt; asks for help when prompted by adult. Moves strips to "Done Trophy Runway" and names specific stuck point. Celebrates micro-wins enthusiastically; uses precise self-advocacy language.
