Attribute Explorers Lesson Plan
Semantic Mapping & Circumlocution Framework for Word-Finding Fluency
Evidence-Based Clinical Purpose
Children experiencing word retrieval difficulty often possess intact receptive concepts but encounter activation bottlenecks in the semantic-phonological network. By systematically generating semantic attributes (category, function, parts, location), learners activate adjacent lexical nodes, reducing "tip-of-the-tongue" anxiety and establishing circumlocution strategies.
Core Target
Students will identify at least 4 semantic attributes to describe target nouns and self-cue target vocabulary with 80% accuracy over 3 clinical sessions.
The Four Semantic Mapping Anchors
1. Category
"What group is it in?"
Animals, tools, vehicles, clothing, kitchenware.
2. Function
"What does it do / do with it?"
Cuts paper, carries water, displays time, digs dirt.
3. Parts / Look
"What parts or features?"
Blades, handle, wheels, fur, wooden base, glass.
4. Location
"Where is it found?"
Kitchen drawer, garage, school backpack, safari.
Phase 1 & 2 Execution Guide
1 Hook & The "Word Freeze" Phenomenon (10 Mins) SLP Direct Modeling
Teacher Script: "Have you ever known the exact word in your head, but your tongue feels frozen? That's called the Tip-of-the-Tongue block. Today we are becoming Attribute Explorers . We don't wait for the word to thaw—we hunt down clues about what it is, what it does, what it has, and where it lives!"
Introduce the hand gesture anchor: 1 finger (Group), 2 fingers (Action), 3 fingers (Parts), 4 fingers (Place).
2 Explicit SFA Modeling: The Compass Anchor (15 Mins) Visual Slides & Web Intro
Display the Anchor Slide with the sample item: "FLASHLIGHT" .
Category: "It's an electrical tool or camping gear."
Function: "You use it to illuminate dark pathways or during power outages."
Parts: "It has a bulb, reflector lens, cylinder casing, switch, and batteries."
Location: "Stored in emergency kits, toolboxes, nightstand drawers, or tents."
Demonstrate circumlocution: "Even if I can't say 'flashlight', saying these 4 things allows my listener to understand me instantly."

3 Guided Practice: Semantic Webs (15 Min)
Distribute the Attribute Web Worksheet . Guide students to co-construct webs for common objects (e.g., telescope, blender, umbrella ).
Scaffolding Prompt:
"If you feel stuck on what it looks like, close your eyes: what shape is it? Is it made of metal, plastic, or fabric?"
4 Clue Showdown Game (15 Min)
Students draw secret object cards from the Clue Catcher Game deck and supply attributes without uttering the root word.
Scoring Mechanism:
4 points for all 4 attributes revealed before guessing; bonus point if listener guesses in under 15 seconds.
Evidence-Based SLP Cueing Hierarchy (Least to Most Restrictive)
Level 1 (Least) Pause & Signal 5-second wait time; finger tap visual cue.
Level 2 Open Semantic "What kind of tool is it? Where do we keep it?"
Level 3 Binary Choice "Is it an instrument or an appliance?"
Level 4 Phonemic Primer "It starts with the /fl/ sound..."
Level 5 (Most) Direct Model State target, student echoes and defines.
High-Support Accommodations
Provide pictorial symbol cutouts for Category, Function, Parts, Location.
AAC users: Pre-program an "Attribute Board" page with descriptive core fringe.
Allow tactile exploration with real objects (e.g. real measuring tape or keys).
Extension & Metacognitive Mastery
Have student compare & contrast two items in the same category (e.g., violin vs. guitar ).
Incorporate rapid-naming challenges under 30-second timers.
Self-monitoring reflection: "Which clue helped my partner guess the fastest?"

The Challenge
Why do words get stuck?
Ever felt a word stuck on the tip of your tongue?
Your brain knows the picture, the feeling, and what it does... but the name is temporarily locked in the mental filing cabinet!
💡 Explorer Secret: You don't have to wait! Describe its attributes and your brain will unlock the name.
When You Freeze
"It's that thing... you know... that thingy that does the stuff!"
Explorer Superpower
"It's a kitchen tool you use to slice bread. It has a serrated metal blade!"
Circumlocution means talking around the word until the word clicks!
