Mission Overview
The goal of this lesson is to establish the habit of Active Multimodal Reading. Students often treat Text-to-Speech as a passive activity (just listening). We want to transform it into an active eye-tracking exercise where the audio serves as a pacer for visual decoding.

The Hook: Bouncing Ball
Show a sing-along video (karaoke style). Ask students: "How do you know which word to sing next?" Guide them to the realization that the ball/highlight tells their eyes where to be.
Teacher Script: "Our computer has its own bouncing ball! It's the highlighter. Today, we're training our eyes to catch that light every single time it moves."

Modeling the "Glue"
Demonstrate the TTS tool on the board. Show two ways to do it:
The Wrong Way: Play the audio while looking around the room or playing with a pencil.
The Right Way: Eyes fixed on the screen, head still, finger optionally pointing to the highlight.

Skill Drill
Students use the Eye Tracking Echo Worksheet. They must play the sentence using their TTS tool and check the box only if they successfully "caught" the highlight for the entire sentence.

Why Speed Matters
Reading speed (Words Per Minute) is not just about efficiency; it's about cognitive load. If the TTS is too fast, the student spends all their energy tracking and has none left for comprehension. If it's too slow, the phonological loop in working memory decays before the sentence is finished.
The "Goldilocks" Zone
The goal is to find the Synchronous Speed—where visual scanning and auditory processing are perfectly aligned. For 2nd graders, this is typically between 0.8x and 1.1x, depending on the tool's default.
Speed Threshold Analysis
Setting Student Experience Instructional Move 1.5x - 2.0x "The words are running away!" "It sounds funny." Use for "Skimming" later in the sequence, but discourage for initial tracking practice. 0.9x - 1.1x "I can see and hear every word at the same time." The target range. Encourage students to bookmark this setting if their device allows. 0.5x - 0.7x "I'm waiting for it to finish." *Distracted behavior* Only use for deep decoding of complex individual words, not for fluent passage reading.
Troubleshooting Transitions
"My student wants the fast speed because it's 'fun'."
Allow 1 minute of "Silly Speed" play at the start of the lesson, then pivot to the "Scientist" mindset: "Now let's find the speed that actually helps our brains learn."
"The student tracks well at 1.0x but can't answer comprehension questions."
The tracking is becoming automated (good), but the cognitive load is still too high. Drop speed to 0.9x and encourage them to pause after every two sentences to 'digest' the information.

The "Copycat" Strategy
Prosody (reading with expression) is often the missing link for students who struggle with decoding. By using TTS as a prosodic model, students can hear the "music" of the language before they have to produce it themselves.
Modeling Phase
Teacher demonstrates listening to a TTS-read sentence and identifying where the voice "goes up" (questions) or "pauses" (commas/periods).
Mirroring Phase
Students repeat the exact same sentence multiple times, focusing on matching the computer's timing and expression.
The 3-Step Copycat Loop

Strategic Scaffolding
Text-to-Speech is often viewed as a "bypass" for decoding, but it can be used as a direct instructional tool for word recognition. By isolating unknown words and using TTS to hear them in context, students build their orthographic mapping.
"Instead of asking 'What word is this?', encourage the student to ask 'What does the computer say this word is?' This shifts the focus to active problem-solving."

The "Tracking Marathon" is the final assessment for this sequence. It measures a student's ability to integrate visual tracking, auditory processing, and active monitoring over a sustained period.
The Metric: Success is not measured by pages read, but by Visual-Auditory Synchronicity. Does the student's gaze follow the highlighter for the duration of the 10 minutes?
Facilitation During the Race

Every 2-3 minutes, walk the room. Quietly tap the desk of students who have looked away to prompt a "pause and reset."
Gaze Tracking
Observe from the back of the room. A student "flickering" (looking at the screen then quickly at the window/clock) indicates their reading speed might need to be increased to maintain interest.
