The Scientific Rule of "Catalyst E"
In our word lab, a CVC compound has a short vowel sound because it is "closed in" by consonants. But when we inject Catalyst E (silent e) at the end, it releases energy! The catalyst reaches back, makes the vowel say its own name (long sound) , and then goes completely silent.

Why Use the "Word Chemistry" Analogy?
Fifth-grade students in self-contained environments often struggle with foundational reading skills, which can feel demoralizing or "childish" if presented with primary-grade graphics. By framing phonics as chemical experiments and catalyst reactions , students engage with age-appropriate vocabulary (reactants, compounds, synthesis, catalysts) while getting the intensive, explicit spelling-sound instruction they require.
1. Introduce the Catalyst (10 mins)
Write cap on the board. Tap out the sounds with students: /k/ - /æ/ - /p/.
"Scientists, this is a CVC compound. It's stable. The short vowel /æ/ is trapped inside. Let's add Catalyst E to the end. (Write the 'e' at the end). Look! Catalyst E is silent, but it has super energy. It reaches back and makes the 'a' say its name: /eɪ/. Our word is now cape!"
2. Tactile Card Experimentation (15 mins)
Distribute the Catalyst E Laboratory Cards sheet. Have students cut out the Reactant Cards and Catalyst E Stamps. Guide students to model this process physically.
Have students lay out the card p i n and say "/p/ /ɪ/ /n/, pin."
Instruct them to slide the e stamp to the end.
Prompt: "What is the new word?" Student: "Pine!" Teacher: "Does the e make a sound?" Student: "No, it's silent!"
