Hotdog Words Lesson Plan
Tier 2 Phonics Intervention Plan • Grade 1 Structured Literacy
VC/CV Syllable Mastery: "Hotdog" Words
Targeted Instructional Blueprint for Syllable Blending, Letter Reversals (b/d), and Short /ŏ/ Articulation
Focus Pattern VC / CV Closed + Closed
Target Learners
Small group (3–4 students) entering two-syllable decoding with compounding fatigue.
Underlying Deficit
Working memory drop during syllable transition + grapheme/phoneme confusion with b/d & /ŏ/.
Instructional Goal
Achieve 90%+ accurate decoding and smooth continuous blending across syllable breaks.
1
Challenge: b / d Letter Reversals (Visual & Motor Confusion)
Multisensory Interventions
Articulatory Feel
/b/ is a "Lip Popper": lips press flat together first (like the straight bat), then pop open.
/d/ is a "Tongue Tapper": mouth opens round first (donut), tongue taps upper teeth.
The "bed" Hand Frame
Students make two thumbs-up fists touching horizontally to spell b-e-d. Left hand forms the letter b (headboard); right hand forms the letter d (footboard).
Motor Pathway Cue
b: "Down the bat, bounce up, around the ball."
d: "Around the donut, pull up tall, pull straight down." Practice via skywriting & sandpaper tracing.
2
Challenge: Short "o" (/ŏ/) Vowel Instability (vs. /ă/ and /ŭ/)
Vowel Valley & Kinesthetics
"Doctor's Mouth" Anchor
Teach /ŏ/ with the visual cue: "Say 'ah' for the doctor." The mouth makes a tall, relaxed vertical oval. Contrast with smiling mouth /ă/ and neutral /ŭ/.
Chin-Drop Check
Students place two fingers under their chin while voicing vowel sounds. For /ŏ/ (as in hot and dog), the chin drops noticeably lower than /ă/ (hat) or /ŭ/ (hut).
Minimal Contrast Drill
Use auditory & visual chaining with immediate feedback:
• hot → hat → hut
• dog → dig → dug
• mop → map → mud
3
Challenge: VC/CV Syllable Blending (Bridging Syllable 1 & 2)
Executive Function & Fluency
Syllable "Touch & Slide"
Students place index fingers on two separate colored cards (e.g., green hot, blue dog). Tap left: "hot", tap right: "dog", then physically slide them together: "hotdog!"
Continuous Phonation
Eliminate the staccato pause ("hot... (3 sec pause)... dog"). Teach students to hum or elongate the final consonant of syllable 1 straight into the initial consonant of syllable 2.
"Spot, Divide, Scoop"
1. Dot the vowels (V).
2. Label bridge consonants (C-C).
3. "Cut" right between the two consonants.
4. Draw finger scoops under each syllable to read smoothly.
Core Instructional Philosophy
Never ask a student to decode a whole two-syllable word cold until each foundational sound component is primed through articulatory and tactile cues.

Lesson Delivery Protocol
30-Minute Tier 2 Step-by-Step Lesson Architecture
Structured Literacy Cycle
1 Visual Drill & Articulatory Warm-Up 4 Min
Action: Rapid flashcard drill prioritizing target confusions.
- Show b: Students touch lips, pop sound: "/b/, bat, lip-popper".
- Show d: Students tap teeth: "/d/, donut, tongue-tapper".
- Show o: Two-finger chin check: "/ŏ/, doctor mouth, jaw drops".
2 Oral Syllable Snapping (Auditory Drill) 4 Min
Action: Auditory-only compound syllable blending without print fatigue.
- Teacher: "Listen: /hot/... /dog/. Blend it!" Students clap hands together: "Hotdog!"
- Words: bed-bug, cob-web, bob-cat, sun-spot.
- Reverse deletion: "Say hotdog without dog." ("Hot!")
3 Explicit Instruction: The VC/CV Syllable Division Routine (I Do / We Do) 7 Min
1. Spot Vowels
Underline the two vowel letters with red dots (e.g., o in hot and o in dog).
2. Bridge & Consonants
Draw bridge between vowels. Identify consonants sitting on bridge: t and d.
3. Divide (VC / CV)
"Cut between the consonants!" Split: hot / dog. Both syllables end in consonant (closed door = short vowel!).
4. Scoop & Read
Finger-scoop syllable 1: "hot". Scoop syllable 2: "dog". Sweep together: "hotdog!"
4 Guided Practice: Syllable Mat Scooping & Word Chaining (You Do Together) 8 Min
Each student uses a physical Syllable Mat with two distinct colored scoop arches (Green arch for Syllable 1, Blue arch for Syllable 2). Students place magnetic tiles or syllable cards, check b/d with their "bed" fists, perform the chin-drop on /ŏ/, and sweep their pointer finger across the blending track.
5 Decodable Text Application 5 Min
Students apply skills in controlled decodable sentences. Syllables in target words are marked with subtle scoops to scaffold transition:
• "The red bed/bug hid in the box."
• "Dan fed the dog a hot/dog."
6 Formative Check & Progress Note 2 Min
Each student reads 2 unassisted probe words. Teacher logs data:
Accuracy: Did they identify b vs. d correctly?
Vowel purity: Clean /ŏ/ or vowel substitution?
Blending latency: <2 sec gap between syllables?
Curated Target Word Matrix (Addressing All 3 Deficits)
hot • dog /ŏ/ focus + initial 'd'
bed • bug 'b' & 'd' in same word!
bob • cat double 'b' + short /ŏ/
cob • web short /ŏ/ + final 'b'
sun • spot contrast /ŭ/ vs /ŏ/
sand • box 'd' & 'b' bridge + /ŏ/
Immediate Error Correction Protocols
If student misidentifies b as d:
Prompt: "Check your 'bed' hands. Look at your left fist. Does this letter have the straight bat first or the donut first?"
If student distorts /ŏ/ to /ă/ or /ŭ/:
Prompt: "Put two fingers under your chin. Say /ŏ/ like the doctor. Did your chin drop low?"
If student pauses between syllables:
Prompt: "Don't drop the first chunk! Hold the /t/ sound in 'hot' and drive straight into 'dog'!"
