Pantry to Plate Lesson Plan
60–90 Minutes
Grades 9–12+ | Functional Academics
IDEA Transition Focus
Postsecondary Independent Living, Consumer Financial Literacy, and Adult Daily Wellness.
Functional Math
Multi-digit division using calculators to find unit price (\(\text{Total Price} \div \text{Ounces}\)) and budget subtraction.
Health & Wellness
Analyzing Nutrition Facts panels (serving size, protein, fiber, added sugars) using MyPlate standards.
Student Learning Objectives (SWBAT)
• Locate & Compare: Identify serving sizes, protein, and added sugars across two competing staple grocery items.
• Calculate Unit Cost: Compute unit cost per ounce/item using handheld calculators and identify the better financial deal.
• Plan Balanced Meals: Construct a 3-meal daily menu hitting 3+ food groups while staying strictly under a $25 daily grocery budget cap.
Required Materials & Setup
• Interactive slide deck: Pantry to Plate Slides
• Student printouts: Pantry Planner Activity & Smart Shopper Worksheet
• Exit ticket: Pantry Check Exit Ticket
• Classroom tools: Handheld big-key calculators, yellow highlighters, clean grocery packages or mock labels.
Target Vocabulary (Functional Word Wall)
Unit Price
Cost for one single unit (oz, count, lb); reveals true grocery value.
Serving Size
The standardized measured portion that the label facts describe.
Added Sugars
Extra sweetener added during manufacturing, not occurring naturally.
Store Brand
Grocer's private label (e.g., Great Value) offering equal quality for less.
Instructional Sequence: Part 1
1. Hook & Reality Check: The Cereal Aisle Trap (15 Min) Slides 1–4
Hold up two boxes: a bright name-brand sugary cereal ($6.29, 12 oz, 14g sugar) and rolled oats ($3.49, 32 oz, 1g sugar). Ask: "You have a $50 weekly grocery stipend in your apartment. Which fuel powers your workday morning without leaving you broke or crashed by 10 AM?"
Teacher Think-Aloud: "Look at the serving size first! If a tiny box has 2 servings, I'll eat the whole box in one sitting and spend $6 on one breakfast."
Unit: Residential Independence & Consumer Math Page 1 of 2

Guided Practice, Accommodations & Assessment
Session Stages 2–4
2. Modeling: The Unit Price Formula (20 Min) Slides 5–7 & Worksheet
Display shelf tags from Slide 5. Walk through the anchor formula: \(\text{Unit Price} = \text{Total Sticker Price} \div \text{Net Weight (oz)}\). Have students key numbers into calculators. Show that a "sale" price on a small jar is often much more expensive per ounce than a family size.
Key Cue: "Always divide dollars by ounces. Dollars on top, ounces on bottom! Think: Money goes in first!"
3. Simulation: Pantry Planner Challenge (25–30 Min) Activity Document
Students work in partner pairs or solo to create their 1-day grocery list for 3 balanced meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner). They must stay within a strict $25.00 daily budget cap while including at least 1 Lean Protein, 1 Fiber/Grain, and 2 Produce items (Vegetables/Fruits).
4. Synthesis & Exit Ticket Cool-Down (10 Min) Cool-Down Sheet
Students complete the 3-question Pantry Check Exit Ticket independently to demonstrate label literacy, unit price decision-making, and goal setting for home grocery shopping.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) & IEP Differentiation
Visual Scaffolding
Color-coded label callouts (Yellow = Serving Size, Green = Protein, Red = Added Sugars). Shelf tags pre-highlighted.
Math Accommodations
Handheld large-display calculators, step-by-step keystroke cards \([ \text{Price} ] \rightarrow [ \div ] \rightarrow [ \text{Ounces} ]\), rounded whole numbers for Tier 3.
Processing & Language
Peer buddy grocery shopping, read-aloud option for nutrition text, visual food group icons on all activity cards.

Your Apartment, Your Budget
Transition Goal
The Real Problem
When you move into your first apartment, grocery shopping is one of your biggest weekly expenses.
If you only buy quick snacks and fast food, you will run out of money before your next paycheck!
The Smart Shopper Habit
Smart shoppers look past bright cartoon boxes and find foods that give them maximum fuel for minimum dollars.
Our Goal Today:
Eat well, feel energized, and keep extra money in your bank account!
Question: How much do you think a week of groceries costs? Slide 2

3 Key Areas to Check
1. Serving Size
Always check how many portions are in the package!
💡 If you eat 2 servings, you double all calories and sugars!
2. Power Fuel
Look for Protein and Fiber .
💪 These keep your stomach full and your brain focused at work.
3. Added Sugars
Look at the Includes Added Sugars line.
⚠️ High sugar causes an energy crash within 1 hour!
Golden Rule: High Protein & Fiber, Low Added Sugar! Slide 3
Breakfast Aisle Showdown
Compare the Facts
Option A: Sugar Puffs $6.29
Package Size: 12 Ounces (8 Servings)

Option B: Rolled Oats $3.49
Package Size: 32 Ounces (30 Servings!)

The Secret Weapon: Unit Price
Smart Shopper Rule
SUPERMARKET SHELF TAG
CREAMY PEANUT BUTTER 16 OZ
Sticker Price
$3.20
Unit Price
20¢ / OZ
The Unit Price tells you the real cost for 1 single ounce!
Don't Trust Big "Sale" Signs
A small jar might look cheap at $2.00, but only has 5 ounces (40¢ per oz). A bigger jar is often the better deal!
Compare Unit to Unit
When comparing two brands, the one with the lower unit price always gives you more food for your dollar!
Look for the small yellow or orange tag on the grocery shelf! Slide 5
How to Calculate Unit Price
Calculator Routine
The Universal Formula
Total Dollar Price ÷ Number of Ounces = Price per Ounce
1
Enter Dollars
Type the sticker price first: $4.80
2
Press Divide (÷)
Hit the division button on your calculator
3
Enter Ounces
Type the ounces: 16 = $0.30/oz
Memory Cue: Money goes in first! Dollars ÷ Ounces Slide 6
