Episode 1: The Warm Pancake & Sweet Syrup Scent
Tactile Prop: Pancake & Scent
Sensory Presentation:
Bring real textured pancake (or warm felt disc) and maple extract on a cotton pad to child's midline. Invite tactile touch and scent exploration.
Facilitator Script & Pause:
"Mmm! Smell the sweet maple syrup! Touch the round pancake." [Wait 12s for reaction or eye gaze].
Switch / AAC Activation:
Position single switch (Big Mac) programmed with: "Pancake please!" Guide child's hand or accept any intentional reach.
2
Episode 2: Sticky Pig & Warm Water Bath
Tactile Prop: Warm Towel & Duck
Sensory Presentation:
Gently touch child's hand with a warm, damp washcloth. Squeeze a squeaky rubber duck gently near ear level to provide auditory cause-and-effect.
Facilitator Script & Pause:
"Sticky, sticky pig! Time to wash clean! Squeak-squeak duck!" [Wait 12s for smile, vocalization, or gaze].
Eye-Gaze Choice:
Present high-contrast target cards: [Duck / Water] vs neutral blank. Record student gaze orienting to the target.

Episode 3: Rhythmic Piano & Gentle Wood Tap
Auditory & Vibration Prop
Tactile / Vibration Input:
Play musical chime or tap a solid wooden block against the table surface so student feels gentle vibrations through palm or tray.
Facilitator Prompt:
"Pig plays music! Ding-ding! Now Pig builds a treehouse: Tap-tap-tap!" [Gentle co-active hand tapping].
Regulation Checkpoint:
Monitor startle reflexes. If student shows auditory defensiveness, switch immediately to soft felt blocks or silent visual waving.
4
Episode 4: Circular Ending & Requesting "MORE"
Core Request Routine
Circular Climax:
Re-introduce the maple syrup prop and plate. "Syrup reminds Pig... she wants another PANCAKE!"
Core Word Model: "MORE":
Model tapping fingertips together for sign "MORE" or guide student's hand to large green AAC card / switch: "MORE PANCAKE!"
Story Closure:
Model pushing the prop away or pressing the red switch: "ALL DONE story!" Close the book cover together.
Eye-Gaze / Direct Selection Protocol for Profound Disabilities
A
Step 1: Errorless High-Contrast Presentation
Hold 1 giant high-contrast object or picture at eye level (12–18 inches away). Observe for orienting eye gaze, head turn, or reach. Reinforce immediately: "You looked at pancake!"
B
Step 2: Field of 2 Choice (Target vs Distractor)
Place 2 cards on tray spaced 15 inches apart (Left: Pancake / Right: Sock or Blank). Ask: "What does Pig eat?" Dwell time of 3+ seconds on target counts as intentional choice.
Post-Story Calming & Proprioceptive Reset (2 mins)
1. Firm Shoulder Press
Provide gentle, downward symmetrical pressure on shoulders or hands to ground proprioceptive input.
2. Sensory Dimming
Lower background lighting or quiet the environment for 60 seconds to allow nervous system settling.
3. Tangible Transition Object
Place the textured craft placemat into child's hands to signal transition to the hands-on sensory activity.
Responsive Indicators:
Eye gaze dwell (3s) Intentional reach/touch Switch activation Tolerated tactile prop
