Instructional Intent & Objectives
Arrival is often the highest-anxiety transition of the school day. This lesson leverages a concrete, gamified railway metaphor to turn an abstract series of tasks into structured "stations." By manipulating physical markers, students shift from passive instruction to active execution.
Students Will Learn To:
Complete 4 core morning arrival tasks.
Self-monitor progress using visual boards.
Independently select a desk activity.
Prerequisite Behaviors:
Gross motor skills to move Velcro pieces.
Match identical visual symbols (train cars).
Respond to simple 2-word verbal cues.
The Four Station Stops
STOP 1
Unpack Gear
Hang coat, put backpack away, place binder in bin.
STOP 2
Check In
Move name card to "Here" or tap greeting station.
STOP 3
Morning Work
Choose table bin (fine motor, playdough, puzzle).
STOP 4
Circle Time
Clean up table desk and sit on visual carpet dot.
Environment Setup Guide
1
Station Color Coding
Mark actual classroom locations with colored painter's tape or visual symbols matching the board colors (e.g., Red tape on the backpack cubbies, Blue near the check-in pocket chart).
2
The Velcro Board Assembly
Print the "Morning Train Activity Board". Laminate it. Attach rough Velcro dots to the white empty square station frames, and soft Velcro pieces to the back of cut-out "Student Train Markers".
3
Cabby Height Mount
Mount individual student boards at shoulder height right beside their lockers or at their desks. Accessibility is key for motor planning.

Verbal Cues & Redirection Prompts
Initial Cue
"Good morning, engineers! Let's check our train board. Where is Stop 1?"
Redirection
"Your train has stopped! Move your marker to Stop 2. Let's do a high-five check-in!"
Scaffold
"Point to Stop 3. What do your fingers need to play with? Playdough or a puzzle?"
Differentiation & Crisis Supports
Sensory Overload
Provide noise-dampening earmuffs right inside their locker (Stop 1). Dim classroom lights slightly during arrival hour.
Motor/Grip Needs
Add thick foam blocks, bottle caps, or small textured toys to the back of cutouts to make grip easier for small hands.
Task Avoidance
Break tasks into tiny chunks. Offer a "First-Then" card: "First move train car to Stop 1, Then 1 minute bubble play!"
