Making Ten Lesson Plan
Bite-Size Directions for Laminated Dual Ten-Frame Math Mats
Group: 3–5 Students
Pacing: 40 Minutes Total
Standard: 1.OA.C.6 / 2.OA.B.2
Lesson Objective
Given a laminated math mat with 2 ten frames and 2 equation lines, students will decompose the 2nd addend, slide counters to make 10, and write the equivalent 10 + n = total equation with 80% accuracy.
Materials Needed
- • 1 Laminated Math Mat per student (2 ten frames + 2 lines)
- • 20 Two-Color Counters per student (10 Blue, 10 Orange)
- • Dry-erase marker, felt eraser, Equation Cards, Exit Ticket
The 5 Bite-Size Student Steps (Chant & Post at Table)
1
Write Line 1
Write problem on top equation line.
2
Build Frames
Put blue in Frame 1, orange in Frame 2.
3
Break 2nd
Draw branches under 2nd addend.
4
Slide to 10
Slide counters until Frame 1 is full.
5
Write Line 2
Write 10 + leftovers = total.
Concise 40-Minute Instructional Sequence
0–5 Min
Warm-Up: "Make Ten Partners" (Rapid Fire):
Teacher calls out: "8 needs...?" Students chant: "2!" | "9 needs...?" ➔ "1!" | "7 needs...?" ➔ "3!" Activates partners to 10.
5–15 Min
I Do: Explicit Teacher Modeling with Mat (\(8 + 5\)):
Teacher shows mat: Write \(8 + 5\) on Line 1. Place 8 blue in Frame 1, 5 orange in Frame 2. Ask: "How many to fill 8? 2!" Branch 5 into 2 and 3. Slide 2 counters up. Write on Line 2: \(10 + 3 = 13\). Both lines equal 13!
15–27 Min
We Do: Guided Mat Practice (\(9 + 4\) & \(8 + 4\)):
Students hold dry-erase markers. Teacher gives Equation Card #1 (\(9 + 4\)). Guide students step-by-step: write on Line 1, place counters, branch 4 into 1 and 3, slide 1 counter to fill Frame 1, write \(10 + 3 = 13\) on Line 2. Repeat with \(8 + 4\).
27–35 Min
You Do: Partner / Independent Equation Cards:
Students draw from the Equation Card deck (\(9 + 5\), \(8 + 3\), \(7 + 4\)). Each student completes the routine on their mat, checks with their partner, wipes clean, and pulls another card.
35–40 Min
Wrap-Up & Exit Ticket (Individual Quick Check):
Wipe mats clean. Hand out 1-page Exit Ticket (2 questions). Teacher scores on IEP tracking rubric.

Quick Reference
1 Equation Line 1 (Top Line) & Ten Frames
Prompt:
"Look at our card: \(8 + 5\). Write 8 on your first line, 5 on your second line. Now place 8 blue counters in your top ten frame and 5 orange counters in your bottom ten frame."
2 Decomposing the Second Addend (The Number Bond)
Prompt:
"Touch Frame 1. How many empty boxes are left? Count: 1, 2! So 8 needs 2 to make ten! Draw two branches under 5. Write 2 in the first branch. If we take 2 from 5, how many are left? 3! Write 3 in the second branch."
3 Sliding Counters & Equation Line 2 (Bottom Line)
Prompt:
"Now slide those 2 orange counters from Frame 2 up to Frame 1. Frame 1 is completely full—that's 10! How many are left in Frame 2? 3! On Equation Line 2, write: \(10 + 3 = 13\). Say it: \(8 + 5 = 13\)!"
Immediate Error Correction Table
What Student Does Immediate Bite-Size Correction
Decomposes 2nd number into wrong parts (e.g. breaks 5 into 1+4 instead of 2+3). ➔ "Look at Frame 1. How many empty holes? 2! The first branch MUST match the empty holes: 2!"
Slides too many counters into Frame 1 (overfilling). ➔ "Stop when the frame is full! A ten frame holds only 10. No extras!"
Writes \(10 + 5\) instead of \(10 + 3\) on Line 2. ➔ "Point to Frame 2 right now. Count only what is left sitting there: 1, 2, 3! Write 3!"
SPED Scaffolds for this Mat
• Finger-Trace: Have students finger-trace the two branches before writing numbers.
• Highlighter Assist: Pre-highlight the "empty spots" on Frame 1 in yellow dry-erase.
