Tactile Showdown Lesson Plan
⏱️ 45-Minute Math Block CCSS: 1.NBT.B.3 • 2.NBT.A.4
🎯 Learning Objectives & Focus
SWBAT construct two-digit numbers using physical base-ten rods and unit cubes directly in showdown bays.
SWBAT inspect the tens place first to determine greater value.
SWBAT place physical symbol cards (>, <, =) between numbers and write the symbol in their recording circle.
🎒 Materials Needed
• Number Chomper Anchor Poster
• Block Battles Showdown Mat (1 per student)
• Comparison Symbol Cutouts (>, <, =)
• Base-Ten Blocks (rods & cubes)
• Pencils
1
Hook & Anchor Introduction (7 mins)
0:00 – 0:07
Gather students around the Number Chomper Anchor Poster . Introduce Chomper the hungry alligator who always faces the greater number.
Key Rule: “Chomper knows tens are the heavy hitters! Always compare the tens digit first. If the tens tie, only then do we check the ones!”
2
I Do / We Do: Showdown Mat Routine (10 mins)
0:07 – 0:17
Identify Numbers: Look at Showdown 1 on the mat: 42 and 24 .
Build On the Mat: Place 4 rods and 2 cubes directly in the 42 bay; place 2 rods and 4 cubes in the 24 bay.
Compare: Count the rods: “4 tens is greater than 2 tens!”
Place Symbol: Drop the > card directly into the center symbol slot.
Record: Write > into the circle underneath. Choral read the partner talk frame!
3
You Do: Partner Showdown Battles (22 mins)
0:17 – 0:39
Students complete Showdowns 1–4 on their mats with a partner. Partner 1 builds Number A, Partner 2 builds Number B. Together, they drop the symbol card into the middle slot, recite the talk frame, and record their symbol in the circle.
4
Debrief & Tie-Breaker Discussion (6 mins)
0:39 – 0:45
Review Showdown 2 (57 vs 53) and Showdown 4 (83 vs 83). Discuss: “How did building with blocks make the tie-breaker clear?” (Students saw 5 rods tied, but 7 unit cubes beat 3 unit cubes).

💡 Scoring & Diagnostic Guide
Digit Reversals (e.g., 29 < 92, 53 > 35): Students who miss these are looking at digit shapes without place value awareness. Refer back to the Day 1 Builder Mat to emphasize position value.
Equal Tens Ties (e.g., 82 < 85, 74 < 78): If students mark these equal, remind them of Rule #2 on the anchor poster: “When tens tie, the ones break the tie!”
Symbol Sleuths Lesson Plan 📋
Day 2 of 2 Abstract • Paper-Based Mastery
Symbol Sleuths Lesson Plan
⏱️ 45-Minute Math Block CCSS: 1.NBT.B.3 • 2.NBT.A.4
🎯 Learning Objectives & Success Criteria
SWBAT compare two two-digit numbers using symbols (>, <, =) without physical manipulatives.
SWBAT analyze comparison statements and correctly identify them as TRUE or FALSE .
SWBAT demonstrate 80%+ accuracy (5/6 or 6/6) on the Chomper Check Exit Ticket.
🎒 Materials Needed
• Number Chomper Poster (on display)
• Symbol Sleuths Worksheet (front & back)
• Chomper Check Exit Ticket (half-sheet)
• Paper Practice Answer Key
• Pencils and highlighters
1
Kinesthetic Warm-Up & Anchor Recall (5 mins)
0:00 – 0:05
Review the anchor poster. Play “Alligator Arms” : Write two numbers on the whiteboard (e.g., 58 and 52). On the count of three, students open their arms to form >, <, or hold their arms parallel for =.
Key Question: “Both numbers have 5 tens! Which digit decided the winner?” (Students call out: “The ones! 8 is more than 2!”)
2
Guided Practice: Sleuth Strategies (10 mins)
0:05 – 0:15
Handwriting Modeling: Remind students of the primary lines at top: Name takes the full top row, Date sits underneath.
Underline Tens First: Model underlining the tens digit in both numbers before writing any symbol.
True/False Investigation: Model Problem 13 (45 > 54): “Is 45 greater than 54? 4 tens is less than 5 tens. That statement is false! Circle FALSE.”
3
Independent Symbol Sleuths Practice (22 mins)
0:15 – 0:37
Students complete Part 1 (Front) and Part 2 (Back). Circulate with a highlighter to spot-check. If a student is stuck on a reversal pair (e.g. 27 vs 72), prompt: “Underline the tens digit in green. Which number has more tens?”
4
Chomper Check Exit Ticket (8 mins)
0:37 – 0:45
Distribute half-sheet exit tickets. Students work in silent test conditions to complete the 6 problems. Collect immediately for same-day grading using the Paper Practice Answer Key .
