Position #4 has a second Sun instead of a Moon.
Imposter: Item #4 Correction: 🌙 (Moon)
Common First Grade Stumbling Blocks
Unit Confusion in AAB: Students might predict another square after two stars because they think it alternates 1-to-1. Have them circle the 3-item block.
Over-counting: In Trail A, students might draw the entire pattern again instead of just the next two shapes. Remind them: "Just two steps forward!"
Multi-Sensory Coaching Strategies
Rhythm Chants: Have students clap on Triangle and pat knees on Circle: "Clap, Pat, Clap, Pat!" Physical movement helps auditory/kinesthetic learners.
Manipulative Backup: Keep colored linking cubes ready. Students recreate the pattern with physical blocks before putting pencil to paper.
Mastery Target: 5 out of 6 items correct indicates readiness for Day 2 Clue Grids.

• Zebra: Eliminated (has stripes, Clue 2 says no stripes)
• Puppy: 4 legs, no stripes, says "Woof!" (All 3 match!)
Answer: Puppy 🐶 (Circled)
Coaching the "Cross-Out" Rule
1st graders often hesitate to write ❌ because they associate it with being "wrong." Rebrand the ❌ as their "Detective Laser" : crossing off an impossible clue gets them one step closer to winning the mystery!
Row & Column Clean-Up Rule
Teach the mantra: "One checkmark per row, one checkmark per column!" As soon as students place a ✔ on Leo's Meat, have them immediately put an ❌ in all remaining empty spots in Leo's row and the Meat column.
Evaluation Standard: Student shows systematic grid markings (X and ✔) rather than just guessing answers.
