Instruction & Facilitation Guide
Target Audience Essential Skills (9-12)
Key Concept Next-Dollar Up Method
Duration 60 - 90 Minutes
Learning Objectives
Read & Locate: Students will locate prices on menus, receipt slips, and food packaging labels.
Understand Labels: Students will identify key information (serving sizes, unit prices) on food containers.
Next-Dollar Up: Students will determine the exact number of one-dollar bills needed to purchase an item up to $10.00 (e.g., $4.25 turns into 5 dollar bills).
Lesson Pacing & Instructional Script

Step 1: Introduction & Visual Menus (Slides 1-5)
Project the slide deck. Walk through how menus display food names on the left and prices on the right. Help students identify key symbols ($) and decimals. Introduce food packaging labels (Price Tags, Serving Sizes).
Teacher Script: "When we go to a diner, the menu tells us how much things cost. Look at the Cheeseburger. Point to where you see how much it costs. The dot is a decimal point. It separates dollars from cents."
20m
Step 2: Teaching the Next-Dollar Up Method (Slides 6-10)
Explain that when we don't have coins, we look at the dollar amount, and then add one more dollar to cover the change. Show how to round up. Draw a number line on the board or use slide visuals to demonstrate.
Teacher Script: "If a milkshake costs $3.50, we look at the first number: 3. We need 3 dollar bills, plus 1 more dollar for the cents. So, we pay with 4 dollars! Let's count them together: 1, 2, 3, 4!"
25m
Step 3: Diner Dash Board Game (Active Play)
Divide students into small groups (2-4 players). Distribute the board game, dice, player markers, and play money ($1 bills). Students take turns rolling dice, moving spaces, reading menu items, and handing the "Next-Dollar Up" amount to a peer playing the "Cashier."

GAME PLAY & ANSWERS
Rules, Accommodations & Key
Facilitating the Diner Dash Board Game
Setup: Print the Diner Dash Board Game . Laminate for durability. Provide 1 six-sided die and small counters as tokens (such as visual food erasers or coin replicas) per group.
Role-Play Roles: Have one student act as the Cashier , and the others as Hungry Customers . Customers roll the die, land on a dish space, locate the price, and count out the required "Next-Dollar Up" bill amount. The Cashier checks their work and accepts the bills. Rotate roles halfway through play.
Self-Correction: Encourage cashiers to say: "That item costs [Price]. To pay Next-Dollar Up, you need [Dollar Up amount]. Thank you!" This reinforces speaking and reading aloud.
Targeted Differentiation Strategies
Supportive Accommodations
Give students pre-cut paper $1 bills to physically manipulate and count out.
Provide physical number lines with markers indicating the dollar-up transition points.
Use highlighter tape to help students focus strictly on the dollars column.
Extension Options
Have advanced students calculate the **exact change** they would receive back from their dollar payment.
Encourage players to land on two spaces, add the prices together, and then find the Next-Dollar Up for the total.
