Learning Objectives
Estimate: Students will estimate task durations within 15-minute accuracy.
Deconstruct: Students will break down a 3-step school task into chronological order.
Telling Time: Read and verify start/end times on digital and visual clocks.
Materials Needed
Task Hackers Slides (Teacher Presentation)
Task Hackers Activity Sheet (1 per student)
Scissors, glue, and highlighters/pencils
Optional: Visual analog timers / clocks

Teacher Action & Student Focus
5 Mins
1. Hook & Warm-Up
Introduce the "Time Monster" (Time Blindness). Show Slide 2 and discuss how time flies or crawls during reading vs. video games.
10 Mins
2. Time Estimation
Explore Slide 3. Teach estimating strategies: using familiar anchors (e.g., 1 class period = 45 mins). Practice predicting common chores or tasks.
10 Mins
3. Step Deconstruction
Slide 4 & 5. Model breaking down a "Science Poster Project" into 3 visual blocks: Plan, Draft, Review. Emphasize why order matters.
15 Mins
4. Hands-on Sorting
Distribute the activity sheet. Students cut and paste task cards in order, estimate times, and map them to their visual timeline.
5 Mins
5. Wrap Up & Reflect
Review estimations as a group. Exit ticket prompt: Write down one task you will break down today and how long it takes.
IEP Accommodations At-A-Glance
Visual Organizers
Always use high-contrast text and visual timelines (included on the student sheet) to help map temporal sequences spatially.
Verbal Cueing & Prompting
Prompt students to compare estimates to anchored references: "Does reading 5 pages take as long as lunch (30m) or an movie (2h)?"

Interactive Modeling (Think-Aloud Script)
Teacher Goal: Demonstrate that large tasks are intimidating and easy to ignore, but breaking them into tiny chunks with time constraints makes them approachable.
Step 1: Confront the Giant Task "Class, let's look at Slide 4. It says 'Write a 2-Page Book Report.' How does that feel to read? Let's be real. It feels like a mountain. When I see that, my brain sometimes freezes up. I think 'I can't do that right now, I'll do it later.' That's our brain avoiding stress."
Step 2: Chop it into Bites "Now, watch how we hack this giant. Can I write a whole report in 10 minutes? No way. But can I spend 10 minutes finding my book and writing down my name and title? Absolutely! That's Step 1. Next, can I write just 3 sentences summarizing my favorite character? Sure, that feels like a 15-minute job. Suddenly, we aren't writing a mountain, we're just building blocks."
Step 3: Pin the Clock "Now, I assign time to each block. If I don't give myself a time block, my brain will drag it out to 2 hours! Let's estimate: writing 3 character sentences... does that take 5 minutes or 20 minutes? Let's look at our anchor: writing one sentence takes about 3 minutes. So 3 sentences is about 10 minutes. Let's write down 15 minutes to give ourselves a tiny buffer."
Running the "Task Hackers" Activity Sheet
1
Distribute & Introduce
Hand out Page 1 (Timeline Sheet) and Page 2 (Cut-Out Cards). Explain that they are designing a timeline for a "Study Session for Science Test".
2
Cut & Sort (Chronology)
Have students cut out the three task cards. Facilitate discussion: What happens first? Do we study flashcards BEFORE we take a quick self-quiz, or after? (Order: 1. Organise notes, 2. Flashcards, 3. Quiz).
3
Estimate & Fill
Students write their time estimates inside each clock/card. Instruct them to calculate total study time at the bottom of the timeline.
Teacher Tips: Pitfalls & Misconceptions
"The Perfect Plan" Fallacy
Students often plan to study for 3 hours straight. Intervene and encourage realistic breaks. Teach that shorter, targeted sessions (e.g., 20 minutes) yield better results.
Analog Clock Blindness
Many 8th-grade SPED students struggle with reading classic analog clocks. Utilize digital time conversions or colored visual timer sectors alongside the analog graphics.

Meet the Time Monster
Have you ever sat down to study, played "just one video game match," and suddenly 2 hours passed ? That's Time Blindness !
Fun Tasks
Time feels super fast! 1 hour feels like 5 minutes.
School Tasks
Time feels super slow! 5 minutes feels like 1 hour.
Teacher Prompt: Ask students: "When does the Time Monster trick you the most?"
Time Hack #1: Use Time Anchors
Don't guess randomly! Compare your school tasks to everyday blocks of time that you already know.
5 Minutes
Like listening to 1 favorite song.
30 Minutes
Like your school lunch break.
60 Minutes
Like watching 1 episode of a show.
Predict: How many "songs" (5 mins) does it take to write down 3 spelling words?
Time Hack #2: Chop the Giant
Huge assignments feel impossible. When we chop them into smaller blocks, our brain relaxes and gets to work!
The Giant
"Study for Science Test"
Too big & scary!
The 3 Mini-Steps
1. Organize Notes (10 min)
2. Read Flashcards (15 min)
3. Take Short Quiz (5 min)
Total Study Time: 30 Minutes! Much easier than studying "all night."
Let's Hack a Task Together!
Interactive Practice
Our challenge: Write a Paragraph for Social Studies. Let's build the 3-step checklist:
Step 1: PLAN
Choose Topic & Fact
Estimate: 5 Mins
Step 2: DO
Write 3 Sentences
Estimate: 15 Mins
Step 3: CHECK
Use Spell Checker
Estimate: 5 Mins
Think-Aloud: "Is 15 minutes enough to write 3 sentences? Let's check our time anchors!"
