Session 01: The Neurobiology of Strategic Breaks
Lesson Context
This lesson shifts the paradigm from breaks as a "reward" or "escape" to breaks as a biological necessity. Students (pre-service teachers) must learn to recognize the physiological signs of dysregulation before behavior becomes disruptive.

Engineering the Environment
The Sensory Spectrum
Providing a break is only half the battle. Providing the right kind of input is what restores the student.
The "Why"
A student who is Hypo-aroused (sluggish) needs movement to wake up the brain. A student who is Hyper-aroused (anxious) needs respite to calm it down.
Two Main Categories

Category 1: Movement & Heavy Work
Best for: Restlessness, difficulty staying in seat, sensory seeking.
Proprioceptive
Pushing, pulling, lifting. "Heavy Work" provides organizing input to the brain.
Vestibular
Spinning, swinging, rocking. Input related to balance and space.

A "Choice Menu" reduces task-avoidance by providing agency while maintaining boundaries.
Limit options to 3-5 clearly pictured activities.
Categorize by "Engine State" (Fast/Slow/Just Right).
Must include a clear "Finish" (e.g., the timer).

From Meltdowns to Messages
Behavior is the Message
Most classroom outbursts are unskilled break requests. The student is communicating "I'm done," but in a way that gets them in trouble.
The Problem
If a student screams and you send them to the office, they got exactly what they wanted: The Break . You just reinforced the screaming.
THE GOAL: FCT
Functional Communication Training (FCT) replaces the "problem behavior" with a "functional communication response."
Teaching the Break: Prompting Hierarchy
Most Invasive
1. Full Physical: Gently guiding the student's hand to touch the "Break" card.
2. Gestural: Pointing to the "Break" card when you see early warning cues.
3. Verbal: "It looks like you need a break. Check your card."
Most Independent
4. Natural Cue: Student feels dysregulation and reaches for the card independently.
Externalizing Advocate: Break Tools
Break Cards
Physical tokens that "buy" time. Constant visual reminders of the option to stop.
Gestures / Signs
Discrete and immediate. Excellent for high-schoolers or older students.
AAC Devices
Programming a high-contrast "Break" button on communication apps.
The Cardinal Rule
"When they ask properly,
the answer is ALWAYS yes."
In the training phase, you cannot deny a valid request. If you say "No, finish two more," you teach them that communication is useless and they should go back to screaming.

You are using breaks as escape. You ask for a break every 2 minutes. You want to talk to the teacher instead of doing the activity.
Behavior Trigger
Try to bargain: "I'll do it later if I can have 10 more minutes of break now."
