In a GUI, focus identifies which element is currently receptive to keyboard input. Without a mouse, focus is your only "cursor."

Navigating the "No Mouse" Simulation
Lesson Context
Primary Goal
Students must move beyond "knowing" shortcuts to "feeling" the systemic logic of an OS. The shift from spatial (mouse) to linear (keyboard) navigation is the core cognitive hurdle.
Expected Struggle
Students will naturally reach for the trackpad. Watch for the "phantom limb" effect. Remind them that for many clients, this isn't an option.
The Simulation Protocol

The "Hard" Stop
Ensure every student has their mouse physically unplugged or trackpad disabled. On many laptops, Fn + F-key can disable the pad. If not possible, a piece of paper taped over the trackpad serves as a tactile reminder.

The Discovery Phase
Allow 3 minutes of "silent exploration." Do not answer questions. Let them discover that Tab cycles and Enter activates. Note who uses the search/menu bar first.

Technical Intervention
If a student is stuck in a "Focus Trap" (a loop of elements they can't leave), teach the Esc or Ctrl+L (address bar) escapes.

Common macOS Issues
• Full Keyboard Access: Must be ON in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard for all controls to be tab-stop ready.
• Menu Bar: Use Ctrl + F2 to jump focus to the menu.
Common Windows Issues
• Windows Key: Often the fastest way to "Escape" a trap by opening the Start menu.
• Context Menu: Remind them of the Menu/App Key or Shift + F10.

Orchestrating Windows and Desktops
Lesson Objectives
Lesson 2 shifts from *navigating within* an app to *navigating between* apps. This requires understanding the "Stack" logic of the OS and the spatial layout of the desktop.
Key Concept: The Stack
Windows and macOS remember the order of apps used. Alt+Tab cycles through this history, not a fixed list.
