Under the dry dirt of the American grasslands, a busy city is hiding. This underground city is made of long, connected tunnels. These tunnels are called burrows . They are built by small, furry animals called prairie dogs.

Prairie dogs work together to dig these homes. A prairie dog town is very organized. It is divided into different neighborhoods. Inside each burrow, there are separate rooms for different needs. One room is a nursery for baby prairie dogs. Another room is a bedroom for sleeping. There is even a listening post near the exit. Here, a prairie dog can listen for danger before going outside.

Living in a large group helps prairie dogs stay safe. They have many predators , like hawks and coyotes. To protect the town, prairie dogs take turns acting as guards. A guard stands on a small dirt mound near the tunnel opening. If the guard sees an enemy, it makes a loud barking sound. This warning signal tells all the prairie dogs to jump back into their safe tunnels. Prairie dogs are amazing engineers. Their underground towns keep them safe, warm, and connected.

Deep on the ocean floor, where the sun never shines, is a dark and freezing world. The water pressure is strong enough to crush a car. Yet, in this extreme place, amazing life thrives. The center of this active world is a hydrothermal vent . These vents are underwater cracks in the ocean crust. They are formed when icy seawater seeps down into the earth, gets superheated by magma, and then shoots back up. This hot water is filled with dark minerals. As a result, the vents look like tall chimneys blowing black smoke into the ocean.

Most food chains on Earth start with the sun. Plants use sunlight to make food. However, in the deep ocean, there is no light for photosynthesis. Instead, tiny microbes called bacteria are the base of this sunless food chain. These specialized microbes can turn the toxic chemicals from the hot vent water into food. This incredible process is called chemosynthesis .

Many strange creatures depend on these tiny microbes to survive. Giant tube worms, which can grow up to eight feet long, live in white tubes clustered around the chimneys. They do not have mouths or stomachs. Instead, they host billions of bacteria inside their bodies to feed them. Ghostly white crabs and blind shrimp crawl over the hot rocks, feeding on the thick mats of bacteria. Although these deep-sea chimneys seem like a hostile environment, they are actually bustling, warm oases of life in the cold deep.

This cavern is known as the Giant Crystal Cave, and it lies nearly one thousand feet below the Earth's surface. Inside, mammoth white crystals of gypsum stretch across the cavern like giant beams of light. Some of these crystals are over thirty-six feet long and weigh up to fifty-five tons. They are the largest natural crystals ever found on Earth, creating a scene that looks like it belongs on another planet.

The creation of these massive crystals required a rare set of geological conditions. For hundreds of thousands of years, the cave was flooded with mineral-rich water heated by a pool of magma deep below. The hot magma kept the cavern's temperature at a steady, scorching 122 degrees Fahrenheit. At this precise temperature, a mineral called anhydrite dissolved into the water, transforming into gypsum. Because the temperature remained perfectly stable for millennia, the gypsum molecules bonded together and grew continuously, molecule by molecule, without stopping.

While the cave is a marvel to look at, it is extremely hostile to human life. The temperature inside routinely reaches 122 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity climbs to over ninety percent. In these extreme conditions, sweat cannot evaporate from a person's skin, making it impossible for the body to cool itself. Without heavy protective suits filled with ice packs, a scientist would suffer severe heat stroke in less than ten minutes. Despite the danger, microbiologists have braved the cavern and discovered strange, dormant microbes trapped inside the crystals. These tiny organisms have survived for tens of thousands of years on a diet of iron and sulfur, proving that life finds a way to survive in the most extreme places on Earth.
