Furry Friends Teacher Guide
Pedagogical Framework & Accommodations for Scaffolded Addition
Universal Design & Sensory Accommodations
• 1–10 Number Line: High-contrast reference line on Page 1 serves as an ongoing visual tool for finding number shapes and counting.
• Oversized Writing Guidelines: All answer fields are blank boxes containing a light horizontal dashed guideline to support written numeral alignment.
• Ultra-High Contrast & Zero Color Clutter: Pure charcoal/black icons on clean white backgrounds eliminate sensory overload and maximize focal focus.
9-Page Scaffolding Progression
Pages 1–3: Counting
Establishes 1-to-1 correspondence. Students count animal groups (dogs, cats, birds) up to 10 and record results in single boxes with guidelines.
Pages 4–7: Combining
Combines two animal groups. Students count and write both active addends in separate boxes, count the sum, and write the total.
Pages 8–9: Drawing
Concrete graphics are removed. Students read the numbers, draw their own dots, and write the full equation __ + __ = __ completely from scratch.
Recommended Facilitation Prompts
For Combining (Pages 4–7):
"Count the dogs in box one and write that number down. Now count the dogs in box two and write that number. Let's count them all together! Write your total!"
For Drawing (Pages 8–9):
"Look at this number. Draw that many dots in the box. Now draw the other group's dots. Write your whole equation from start to finish!"
Strategic Differentiation
Support
Have students physically trace the outline of their drawn dots before counting. Use plastic blocks as 1-to-1 tactile replacements inside empty drawing fields.
Extend
Encourage students to create their own animal equations (e.g., "7 cats + 3 cats = 10 cats") on paper and read them aloud to build speaking confidence.
