The Pacing Mission
Teach standard 1.OA.4 by guiding students through the Student Packet over 6 days, followed by 4 days of Showdown Games to cement addition-for-subtraction automaticity!
Days 1-6 Packet Play
The Strategy Casebook Playbook
Page 1
Tens Frames (Concrete): Students color red/yellow counters to identify missing addends up to 10. Emphasize filling empty spaces.
Page 2
Part-Whole Maps (Representational): Use circles and part-whole bar bonds. Count on from the known part up to the whole.
Page 3
The Flipside Switch (Fact Families): Visual fact family houses. Show that addition equations flipped backwards turn into subtraction.
Page 4
Think Addition (Abstract): Convert subtraction directly into missing-addend templates (e.g. 10 - 8 becomes 8 + ? = 10). Solve by hopping forward.
How to Roll Out the Showdown Games
1. Flipside Showdown Board Game
Print Page 1 & 2 of the Game Board. Let students cut, color, and fold the stand-up detective tokens. Use a pencil and paperclip as a spinner. Move along the path and solve equations verbally with a partner.
2. Case Solver Write-Wipe Mats
Slip the double-sided Math Mats into plastic sheet protectors. Give students dry-erase markers and 10 counters. Partner A says a subtraction problem. Partner B builds it on Side 1 or flips and solves it on Side 2!
Remedial Golden Pointer:
If students struggle, prevent them from counting backwards. Always sit them on the smaller number and guide them to count up to the whole team number. Hops forward are fast, visual, and highly secure for remedial progress.
