Beyond the sunlit surface of the ocean lies a vast, mysterious world known as the midnight zone. Here, thousands of feet below the waves, the water is freezing cold, and the weight of the water is crushing. Humans cannot survive in this harsh environment without special deep-sea submarines. These strong vessels are designed to withstand the immense pressure of the heavy ocean above.
As a submarine descends, the bright blue water fades into a deep, velvety blackness. At this depth, sunlight cannot reach, yet the deep ocean is far from empty. Instead, it is filled with strange and wonderful creatures that have adapted to a world without sun. Many of these animals produce their own light. This is called bioluminescence, or living light. Tiny lanternfish glow like floating sparks, while the anglerfish uses a glowing lure to attract its food.
