Week 1: Play-Based Regulation Baseline (IEP Goal: G1)
Student Age Kindergarten
Clinical Session Objective
Measure natural behavioral baselines across five core prompts (Direction, Transition, Coping choice, Communication, and Task) under a playful, low-demand Superheroes in Training theme adapted specifically for kindergarten attention spans and fine-motor developmental norms.

Kindergarten Adaptation Rules
Keep Cues Concrete: Minimize abstract rules. Use the visual cards explicitly.
Encourage Drawing: Let the student express themselves via circles/colors rather than text.
Shorter Duration: Limit the final task to exactly 2 minutes of quiet focus.

Playful Introduction
"Hello, Friend! Today we are visiting our Superpower Room. You are a superhero in training! Superheroes practice cool skills like looking, listening, and taking deep breaths. Let's do a couple of quick checks to see how your battery feels today."
1 Direction Trial
Simple task demand
"Let's look at page 1 of our logbook. Can you draw your first initial or a small star in this name box right here?"
Observe: Does the child begin within 10-15s? Log prompt level.
2 Transition Trial
Material switch / physical clean up
"Great work. Now, let's close our book, put our hands on our knees, and slide it to the side so we have a clean desk."
Observe: Pivot compliance, resistance, or task retention delay.
3 Coping Choice Trial
Simple emotional choice
"If school feels a little tricky, which hero power on this sheet would you want to try? Deep Breath, Squeeze Toy, or Counting?"
Observe: Spontaneous choice vs hesitation or non-response.
4 Communication Trial
Asking for support
"If you wanted to take a super quick rest, can you point to this visual card with the hourglass to show me?"
Observe: Style of communication (verbal, pointing, physical cue).
5 Focus Shield Task (2-Minute Duration Probe)
Tracing and coloring activity
"Now let's try a focus mission. We are going to trace the lines inside this shield on page 2. I'm going to start this timer for 2 minutes. Let's see how much we can trace before the chime!"
Observe: Task retention, visual focus, off-task looking, or verbal refusal.
Integrated Coping Practice (Post-Baseline)
"We finished our 5 trials! High five! Now let's try our Balloon Breathing. Smell the flowers (Inhale 4s)... now blow out the birthday candles (Exhale 6s)! Awesome hero breathing."

HERO TRAINING HOME MANUAL
Provider
Ms. Hartman, LCSW
Dear Hero Family,
This week, your child officially started their Superpowers in Training program! In our counseling room, we use a fun, empowering superhero theme to help your kindergartener practice listening, task transitions, asking for help, and managing big feelings (IEP Goal G1). This guide shares our clinical baseline strategies so you can easily reinforce these skills in your daily home routine.
Our "Superpower Room" Words
🔋 The Superpower Battery (1-5)
We use a 1 to 5 visual meter (with emojis!) to rate body energy. If your child feels frustrated or hyper, they have "Low Fuel" (Level 2). When calm, they are "Fully Charged" (Level 5).
🎈 Balloon Breathing
We practice deep, controlled breathing. We inhale slowly for 4 seconds ("smell the flowers, blow up the balloon") and exhale for 6 seconds ("blow out the candles").
Reinforcing Hero Skills at Home
1
Playful "Command 1" Transitions
Kindergarteners struggle most when shifting between tasks (e.g., shutting down tablets, cleaning up toys). Use transition warnings: "In 2 minutes, we are going to do a fast clean-up pivot. Put your hands on your knees when done!" Let them practice slides or high-fives as a completion marker.
2
The 2-Minute Desk Quest
At home, practice building focus. Set a simple physical timer for exactly 2 minutes and do a quiet, uninterrupted puzzle, maze, or coloring page together. Praise their "focus shield" power!
3
Nightly Battery Checks
Before bedtime or dinner, ask: "Where is your hero energy battery right now?" Let them check with their hand on their chest or point to our emoji system. This builds natural body awareness.
