Grid Gliders Guide
Day 1 Focus
Baseline tracking for Task Initiation Speed and Sustained Attention Duration (Grade 3).
Target Behaviors Initiation & Focus
Class setup Individual Desk Work
Required Tools Pencil & Timer
1 Mindset Landing & Warm-Up (5 Mins)
The "Freeze-Frame" Challenge: Have students sit tall. Show an emoji or drawing on the board for exactly 10 seconds. Cover it. Students draw it from memory on a blank scratch paper.
Purpose: Collects physical focus, settles high energy, and establishes teacher-directed tracking.
2 Mission Launch (5 Mins)
Distribute the student worksheets face down. Use the script below to frame the session as a non-threatening exploration game.
// SCRIPT CUE (Read verbatim with enthusiastic, neutral voice):
"Explorers, welcome to Brain Basecamp! Today we are testing our focus radars with Grid Gliders. On my signal, you'll flip your map over. Your goal is to work independently to solve the shape paths and track down target symbols. This is not a race. It is a mission to see how long your focus engine can run smoothly. Try to stay in your zone until you reach the basecamp flag. Ready... set... flip and begin!"
3 Active Observation Strategy (20 Mins)
As students begin, start a running class timer. Circulate quietly with the observation sheet on page 2.
Task Initiation Watch
Note students who delay starting. Score Immediate (<10s), Hesitant (10-30s), or Delayed (>30s or requiring extra prompt).
Sustained Attention Watch
Look for off-task physical cues (looking away, playing with pencils). Use a stroke/tally on your tracker if a student needs a verbal reminder.
4 Standardized Prompt Hierarchy
To maintain standardized baseline data, only prompt off-task students using these exact tiers. Record prompts on tracker.
Level Prompt Style Verbal Script Cue Tier 1 Non-verbal cue Double tap table/paper quietly near student. Tier 2 Neutral general nudge "Remember to check your next glider row." Tier 3 Direct redirect "Pick up your pencil and solve the next shape."

How to Use: Write student names before the session. As the task begins, mark Initiation Latency . During the 15-minute work block, record any off-task markers or physical prompts needed. Note the final progress step reached.

Focus Scoring Reference
Task Initiation Metric
Fast: Student picks up pencil and writes within 10 seconds.
Mid: Start latency of 10-30 seconds; may scan page or fidget.
Slow: Needs direct prompt to flip or write (>30s lag).
Sustained Attention Metric
High: Works for 5+ min blocks without looking up/distraction.
Med: Breaks focus every 2-3 min but returns to task on own.
Low: Off-task within 1 min; requires Tier 1/2 prompts to reset.

Tangled Trails Guide
Day 2 Focus
Baseline tracking for Independence in Problem-Solving and Frustration Tolerance Levels (Grade 3).
Target Behaviors Independence & Grit
Class setup Individual Desk Work
Challenge Style Incremental Difficulty
1 Mindset Landing & Warm-Up (5 Mins)
The "Impossible Mirror" Game: Instruct students to draw a perfect circle with their right hand in the air, while making a square shape with their left foot.
Purpose: Activates cognitive flexibility, highlights that doing two things at once can feel tricky, and normalizes feeling "stuck."
2 Mission Launch (5 Mins)
Distribute student worksheets face down. Use this script to frame the session, setting up a cognitive boundary that actively checks student self-reliance.
// SCRIPT CUE (Read verbatim):
"Explorers, welcome back to Brain Basecamp! Today we are navigating Tangled Trails. This mission features winding pathways and hidden symbol codes. Some of these paths might feel easy, while others are designed to make your brain work extra hard. If you get stuck, that's exactly what is supposed to happen! Try everything you can think of before raising a hand. Let's see how much of this map you can conquer independently. Ready... set... flip and begin!"
3 Observation and "Help" Protocol (20 Mins)
To collect accurate baseline data on independence and frustration, do not immediately solve problems for students who ask. Instead, use this systematic response table:
Student Action Teacher Standard Response What to Record on Tracker Immediate Help Request "Take another close look at the map instructions." Mark H1 (Help Level 1) Second Help Request "Show me where you've already tried starting." Mark H2 (Help Level 2) Frustration Cue (sigh/pencil drop) "Take a deep breath. Try one tiny block first." Note behavioral cue on tracker
