1
Wash & Soften Nails
Preparation
Soak or wash hands in warm, soapy water for 2–3 minutes. Warm water softens keratin, preventing painful nail splitting and splintering.

2
Sanitize Tools & Set Work Area
Safety Setup
Wipe clippers with an alcohol pad. Lay down a clean paper towel or work directly over a waste bin to neatly catch falling clippings.

3
Find the "Safe Line" (White vs. Pink)
Critical Check
Identify the white free edge versus the pink nail bed. Never place clippers onto the pink quick—cutting the quick causes bleeding and pain.

Make Small, Straight Cuts Across
Technique
Cut straight across the nail in 3 to 4 small, gentle snips. Avoid chopping the whole nail in one squeeze. Leave a thin 1 mm sliver of white edge.

5
Shape Corners Carefully
Hands vs. Feet
For fingernails: gently round sharp corner tips. For toenails: leave edges straight across—never dig deep down the side edges (prevents ingrown nails).

6
File & Smooth in One Direction
Finishing
Hold an emery board angled against the edge. Stroke in one single direction from side toward center. Do NOT saw back and forth, which causes jagged edges.

Dispose Clippings & Disinfect
Hygiene Cleanup

Nail Anatomy, Technique & Safety
Healthy Habits for Independence
Trim fingernails every 1–2 weeks
1. Anatomy Map: Where to Cut Safely
The Free Edge (White)
SAFE CUT ZONE
The dead keratin portion extending past the fingertip. Always leave a 1 to 2 mm white sliver to protect the skin underneath.
The Quick (Pink Area)
DANGER ZONE (STOP)
The living nail bed full of sensitive nerves and blood vessels. Never clip into pink skin—it will cause immediate bleeding and pain.
Cuticle & Folds
PROTECTIVE SEAL
Skin barrier sealing the nail root against bacterial and fungal infections. Never cut or chew cuticles. Apply lotion if dry.
FINGERNAILS: Gentle Curve
- Trim straight across first, then round corners lightly to follow natural fingertip curve.
- Smooth rough edges with an emery board so they won't catch or tear clothes.
TOENAILS: Straight Across Only
- Always cut completely straight across without rounding corners down the sides.
- Rounding corners on toenails forces nail edges into flesh, causing ingrown nails.
Hygiene Do's
- ✓ Use your own tools: Keep personal clippers in a designated kit to prevent fungus.
- ✓ Soften first: Trim directly after showering when nails are pliable.
- ✓ Sanitize clippers: Wipe metal blades with 70% rubbing alcohol after every session.
- ✓ Snip hangnails: Use clean cuticle nippers at base; do not pull!
Safety Don'ts
- ✕ Never bite or tear: Chewing introduces mouth bacteria and tears skin raggedly.
- ✕ Never rip hangnails: Tearing living skin causes painful infections (paronychia).
- ✕ Never share clippers: Sharing spreads wart viruses and nail fungi between people.
- ✕ Never saw back & forth: Vigorous sawing frays nail keratin layers.
Stop & Ask an Adult or Healthcare Provider If You Notice:
Safety First
Redness, swelling, heat, or throbbing pain around the nail margin.
Any pus, drainage, or bleeding that does not stop with light pressure.
Nail edges curling deeply into side skin (painful ingrown nail).
Nails that turn yellow, green, black, or become thick and crumbly.
Nail Trimming Practice & Independence Log
