Behavior Management Process

Preventative
1
State Expectations
Square up, strong voice. Directions are specific, concrete, sequential, observable steps; steps are small enough that every student complies. Economy of language (3-4) words. Teachers don’t talk over students or engage misbehavior. Quiet power: teacher always speaks slowly and quietly to develop compliance.
2
Narrate the Positive
Adults narrate the positive student behaviors related to the expectation shared (rather than calling out the negative) with praise, challenge and aspiration to motivate themselves.
3
Radar/Scan Proximity
Adults are “seen looking” using eye contact and exaggerated scanning. Adults position themselves to handle hot spots.
Note: Discipline begins with classroom climate and culture, the following is a progression of intervention techniques.
Level 1
4
Non Verbal Warning
Redirection using proximity, facial expression or hand gestures.
5a
Verbal Warning
Communication should be quiet and personal as much as possible. Explaining why the action is required is helpful for learning. Provide opportunity to Fix, Practice, or Apologize.
5b
Cool Down Area
Never put kids in the hall for timeout. Allow students to calm down and reflect (sheet provided that follows Restorative Practices) providing a safe place to cool off within the class when needed.
5c
Cool down visit Buddy Teacher*
Up to 15 min
This is not a consequence yet. We are building relationships with kids. We are de-escalating. Utilize a buddy room and limit timeouts to age appropriate guidelines (15-60 mins). Buddy rooms should be near each other to avoid students walking down the halls. **Buddy students log close to the door to ensure documentation of student exit/entry.
6
Name on board
Each recurrence after a verbal warning will result in a check mark by name or a clip down on the behavior chart.

Students will return to your class after they’ve gone through the reset process. Teachers should never contact other staff member to remove a student other than counselor or Admin.
