1 A Dog was happily hurrying home with a prized bone from the butcher. He ran as fast as he could, crossing a narrow footbridge over a river. The water was as still and smooth as a mirror, and the Dog stopped to look down. What he saw was another dog with a bone that was clearly much bigger than his own!

2 If the Dog had stopped to think, he would have known that he was seeing his own reflection. But the greedy Dog did not think. He dropped his bone and dove at the dog in the river. Alas! There was no other dog and no other bone! When the dog finally swam back to shore, he stood sadly thinking about the good bone he had lost. What a foolish, greedy Dog!

The Wind and the Sun
Focus: Gentle Power vs. Force
Chunk 1 • The Cold Blast (Wind) Vocabulary: blast = hard gust of wind
1 The Wind and the Sun argued about who was stronger. They debated for a long time. Suddenly, a man in a coat walked down the road.
2-3 "Whoever can strip that man of his coat is stronger," said the Sun. The Wind went first with a cold, howling blast!
4 The harder the Wind blew, the tighter the man wrapped his coat! The Wind could not blow it off.

Part 1 • Constant Fear (Paragraphs 1-2) Vocabulary: pounce = jump and attack
A group of mice lived in a big house with an enemy: the Cat! Whenever the Cat heard a mouse, she would pounce. The mice lived in constant fear. Head Mouse called a meeting: "We need a plan to know when the Cat is coming!"
Part 2 • The Young Mouse's Idea (Paragraphs 3-5) Vocabulary: simple = easy to understand
A Young Mouse stood up: "I have a simple plan! Hang a bell around the Cat's neck. When the bell rings, we will hear her coming and run!" The mice cheered and danced. They thought their problem was solved!
