SAY:
"Hey [Student's Name]! Welcome to our word detective session today. I'm really excited to work with you on becoming an even stronger reader. To get started, let's warm up our word brains with a few quick questions. You can tell me your answers or write them down, whatever feels best for you."
"First, can you tell me: What helps you figure out a word you don't know? What's one thing you try to do when you see a word you've never seen before?"
Note: Listen for strategies like "sounding it out," "looking at the picture," or "skipping it." Validate all attempts.

SAY:
"Alright, our brains are warmed up! Decoding just means figuring out how to read words, especially new or tricky ones. Look at our slide deck here. Our goal today is to unlock the secrets of words and turn you into a super decoder!"

"Many long words are actually made up of smaller words or parts that we already know. Think of words like building blocks! Let me show you. If I see the word unhappy , I know the chunk 'un' means 'not' and I definitely know the word 'happy'. So 'un' + 'happy' makes 'unhappy'!"
Advance to Slide 3: Strategy 2: Sound It Out & Blend!
"This strategy is all about using the sounds of letters. When you see a word: Say each sound slowly, then blend them together. Let's try the word stop . How would you sound that out and blend it?"
