Defining Feedback
What is Feedback?
Feedback is simply information about how we are doing and how we can improve.
It is NOT a grade on your worth as a person. It is just the "system status" of your current skills.
The Map
It points out where you are and shows you the path to get where you want to go.
The Tool
It gives you the exact action steps to upgrade your work and behavior.

Why It Matters
Three Settings for Feedback
School
Helps you score better on assignments, learn new skills, and pass exams easier.
Learn & Adjust
Work
Helps you keep your job, keep customers happy, and unlock promotions or raises.
Perform & Grow
Life
Helps you build stronger friendships, resolve arguments, and grow as a person.
Connect & Thrive

Self-Regulation Science
The Brain's "False Alarm"
When we hear constructive feedback, our brain's emotional center (the amygdala) can mistake it for a physical attack.
This triggers "Fight, Flight, or Freeze" before we even think!
Signs of a False Alarm:
- Heart starts beating fast
- Urge to say: "That's not fair!" or "I didn't do it!"
- Feeling heavy, ashamed, or wanting to shut down

De-escalation
How to Turn Off the Alarm
Before you speak or react, you must de-escalate your brain's alarm. Here are two quick ways:
The 5-Second Pause
Take one slow breath in for 4 seconds, and hold it. Then let a long breath out. This signals your nervous system that you are totally safe.
The Grounding Anchor
Quietly press your feet flat on the floor or rest your hands on the desk. Notice the feeling of the solid ground holding you up.

Strategy Overview
The "Hear, Breathe, Choose" Strategy
A simple, step-by-step roadmap to handle any feedback successfully.
Step 1
HEAR
Listen quietly to the information. Let the other person finish talking completely.
Step 2
BREATHE
Calm your body, check your feelings, and ask questions to make sure you understand.
Step 3
CHOOSE
Make an action plan to try the advice and upgrade your future skills.
Your Action Framework

Step 1 Deep Dive
The Setup
Step 1: Just Hear
When someone gives you feedback, your main job is to receive the signal without interrupting.
This shows you are mature, professional, and ready to learn.
How to look and act ready:
Neutral Eye Contact
Look towards the speaker so they know you are listening.
Open Body Language
Keep hands relaxed, shoulders soft, and face calm.
Hold Your Words
Wait until they are completely finished before speaking.
Focus: Listening Skills

Step 2 Deep Dive
Cool-Headed Questions:
To check understanding:
"Could you show me an example of how that should look?"
To get clear steps:
"What is the very first step I should change next time?"
To confirm you got it:
"So, you'd like me to start on task A before task B, correct?"
The Check-In
Step 2: Breathe & Clarify
Take that deep breath to quiet your alarm. Once you are calm, ask clarifying questions to make sure you fully understand what to do.
Asking friendly questions shows you care about doing a great job!

Step 3 Deep Dive
The Action
Step 3: Choose & Upgrade
Now it's time to put the feedback into action. You get to decide how to update your system's code.
Focus on making small, steady improvements rather than trying to be perfect instantly.
A
Pick One Thing
Don't try to change everything at once. Focus on one clear instruction first.
B
Write It Down
Keep a record of what you need to adjust so you don't forget it when busy.
C
Practice & Track
Give yourself a week to practice. Look back to see how your skill leveled up.
Focus: Growth Actions

School Setting
School Scenario
The Scenario: Mr. Davis hands back your essay and says: "You have great ideas here, but you need to group them into clear paragraphs instead of writing one giant block of text."
Old Reaction (System Crash)
Slamming the paper in your desk, muttering "He hates me anyway," and refusing to write paragraphs next time.
Upgrade Lab Reaction
Taking a 5-second breath. Saying: "Okay, I see what you mean. Could you show me where the first paragraph break should start?"

Work Setting
Workplace Scenario
The Scenario: Your shift manager says: "You are doing great stocking the boxes on the shelves, but you need to speed up a little bit so we finish before the store opens."
Old Reaction (System Crash)
Saying "I am working as fast as I can!" and stomping off to the breakroom to cool down.
Upgrade Lab Reaction
Grounding your feet. Saying: "Got it, I will focus on speed. Do you have a tip on how to slice the boxes open faster?"

Life Setting
Personal Life Scenario
The Scenario: Your friend tells you: "It feels like you aren't listening when we talk because you keep looking down at your phone during our conversations."
Old Reaction (System Crash)
Getting defensive: "I can multitask! You are being too sensitive anyway," and putting headphones in.
Upgrade Lab Reaction
Breathes in. Saying: "I'm sorry, I didn't realize it made you feel that way. I'll put my phone face-down on the table while we chat."

Evaluating Quality
Evaluating Feedback
Not all feedback is high quality. We must learn to evaluate what we hear so we only apply what actually helps us grow.
Ignore insults or mean tones, but look for the core message underneath.
Feedback Red Flags
General insults ("You are bad at this"), mean tone, or given to humiliate you in public.
Feedback Green Flags
Specific actions ("Try grouping items by color"), helpful tone, given privately to support your growth.

Mindset Shifts
Updating Your Brain's Code
"I made a mistake. I am just bad at this."
"This is a patch. My system is updating its code."
"They are criticizing me because they don't like me."
"They want me to succeed, so they are giving me tools."

Lab Wrap-Up
Your Blueprint for Growth
Next, you will use the Feedback Blueprint Form to analyze a piece of real feedback from your own life.
Remember: every professional athlete, video game developer, and master chef uses feedback to become great.
The Challenge:
Think of one piece of advice you got recently in school, at home, or at work.
We will walk through your emotional response, how you calmed your amygdala alarm, and your action steps.
Let's Level Up!

Directions: Read each question carefully. Fill in the circle next to the best choice. Remember to think about the self-regulation strategies we learned!
1
What is the main purpose of receiving feedback in school, work, or life?
A) To give you a permanent rating or grade on your worth as a person. B) To give you information on how you are currently doing and how you can improve. C) To let other people show they are better or smarter than you.
2
Why does constructive feedback sometimes make us feel angry, nervous, or defensive?
A) Our brain's alarm system (the amygdala) mistakes the words for a physical threat. B) Teachers and employers always deliver feedback in a mean way on purpose. C) It means we are failing and there is no way for us to learn the skill.

3
Which behavior is the best example of Step 1: HEAR in action?
A) Immediately telling the person: "But that wasn't my fault!" B) Turning around, putting headphones in, and walking away to calm down. C) Listening quietly without interrupting, keeping eye contact, and letting them finish talking.
4
Your manager at work says: "You need to speed up a bit when stocking these shelves." Which response is the best "Upgrade Lab" reaction?
A) "I am already working as fast as I can! Nobody else does it better than me." B) "Got it, I'll focus on speed. Do you have any tips on how to slice the box lids open faster?" C) Say nothing, roll your eyes, and complete the work extremely slowly to prove a point.
5
What is a feedback "Green Flag" that tells us information is helpful and constructive?
A) It is shouted across a loud room so that all of your peers can hear it. B) It gives you specific actions, points out what can change, and is shared in a helpful tone. C) It uses general insults or names like "You are lazy" rather than focusing on the actual work.
