The Case of the Confusing U
Mission: Find and highlight all long "U" words (/oo/ and /yoo/)
Detective Hugo was quite unusual. He loved puzzles, especially word puzzles. His current case involved the letter U , which seemed to be playing tricks!
One sunny Tuesday, Hugo found a clue. It was a picture of a blue moon. "Hmm," he mused, "blue has a long U sound, spelled with UE !" He wrote it in his huge notebook.
His next lead took him to a music school. A young student was practicing a flute. "Aha!" thought Hugo. "Flute also has a long U sound, but it's spelled with a silent E after the U !" He jotted down music and flute.
Later, at a fruit stand, he bought a juicy fruit. "This fruit has a long U sound, but it's spelled UI ! How unusual!" he exclaimed. He also saw a sign for "new juice," where new used EW for the sound.
His head began to whirl. He knew the long U could also be found in words like cute (u_e), true (ue), chew (ew), and even cruise (ui).
Hugo finally understood. The letter U wasn't trying to confuse him; it just had many helpful friends that changed its sound. He closed his notebook, smiling. This was one puzzle he had truly solved !
