Story Builders Teacher Guide Teacher & SLP Blueprint
Story Builders: Playbook Guide
Target: 4-5 Step Stories Ages: Kindergarten – 3rd Grade
Speech & Language Target Targets
Expressive Language
Using cohesive transition markers (first, next, then, last ) to formulate logical, grammatically correct sentences about a sequential process.
Executive Function & Memory
Retaining multi-step instructions, organizing items spatially, and planning sequential narratives in working memory before verbal production.
Lesson Sequence & Pacing Guide
Warmup
Slide Presentation (10-15 mins): Walk through the transition block definitions on Slide 2. Complete the collective practice stories as a group. Ask: "What happens if we flip the steps?" to solidify chronological understanding.
Hands-On
Pizza Cut & Paste Worksheet (15-20 mins): Distribute the worksheet and cut-out sheets. Guide students through tactile sorting before applying glue. Once glued, support phonetic or orthographic sentence building on lines.
Drill & Play
Oral Task Cards (10 mins): Cut out task cards. Have students sort and retell sequences aloud. To gamify: hide the card steps and see if they can recall and name the correct order from memory!
Scaffolding & Differentiation
Scaffold Down (Struggling Students)
Limit focus to 3-steps (First, Next, Last) rather than 4 or 5. Provide cloze sentences with visual cues: "First, roll the ___." Have students point to the correct card instead of placing independently.
Scaffold Up (Advanced Students)
Introduce more complex, optional transitions (e.g., meanwhile , subsequently , immediately after ). Encourage detailed sensory descriptions (how objects look, smell, feel, or sound).
Sample Copy-Paste IEP Goals
Goal A: "By (date), given a randomized 4-step sequence (visual or textual), student will arrange steps chronologically and describe the sequence utilizing at least 3 transition words with 80% accuracy across 3 sessions."
Goal B: "By (date), when prompted to describe a familiar daily routine (e.g. washing hands), student will verbally sequence 4-5 steps using complete grammatical sentences and connective language with minimal cueing."
