Implementation Guide: Soccer Star Success System
Teacher Resource
System Goal
This system is designed for 4th-grade students to build emotional regulation, resilience, and a growth mindset through the engaging lens of soccer.
The Win Condition
Winning isn't about being perfect; it's about staying in the game, using your strategies, and accepting feedback to improve your play.
The Setup
-
1
Define the Prize
Collaborate with the student to choose a meaningful reward. Write it in the "Big Prize" box on the tracker.
-
2
Set Target Behaviors
Award pieces for specific "Skill Moves":
- Growth Mindset: Using "Yet" statements.
- Feedback Pro: Accepting a correction with a calm body.
- Regulation: Choosing a reset strategy (like a puzzle) before getting stuck.
-
3
Visual Motivation
Display the Pitch Puzzle prominently. Use high-quality markers or stickers to color the "puzzle pieces."
The Halftime Break
A "Halftime" is a strategic pause. It's an opportunity to look at the scoreboard, check the game plan, and make adjustments.
Reflection Tips:
- Puzzle Strategy: Since puzzles are her go-to strategy, encourage her to complete a small physical puzzle during halftime to lower her "heat index."
- Accepting Coaching: Use the "Listened to feedback" checkbox to celebrate moments where she accepted help without a "penalty" (outburst).
- The "Yet" Rule: Model the Growth Mindset prompt: "I can't do this yet, but I'm practicing."
Discussion Prompts
When accepting feedback:
"Great job taking that coach's tip! That shows you have a champion's mindset. Color in a piece for 'Feedback Pro'!"
When transitioning back:
"You finished your puzzle and reset your energy. You're ready to head back onto the pitch for the second half!"
Champions are built in the practice.
Consistency is key to system success
