Warm-Up: Listening to Our Body Signals (5 Mins)
Circle Time Hook
Facilitator Script: "Put both hands on your tummy! Our bodies have smart little alarm clocks inside. When our bladder is full, it gives us a gentle whisper: 'Time to go!' What does your body do when it has to go?"
🦵 The Wiggle Dance
🎈 Full Bubble Tummy
✋ Crossing Legs
Key Rule: "We don't wait for the fire alarm! As soon as we feel the whisper, we use our Hero Words!"
2
Direct Instruction: The 4 Restroom Hero Codes (8 Mins)
Core Content
#1
Speak Up Right Away
Raise hand or show the visual pass: "May I please use the restroom?" Never hide your need.
#2
Privacy & Space
Knock gently, close door latch, keep eyes on own body. Give friends privacy always.
#3
Clean Wipe & Quick Flush
Wipe front-to-back (3-4 squares), drop in bowl, push flush once with handle.
#4
Soap & Scrub 20 Seconds
Bubbles on palms, backs of hands, between fingers while singing the Hero Song!
Proactive Social Worker Tip: Many kindergarteners fear the loud automatic flush or darkness. Explicitly tour the school restroom together, test the flusher with ears covered, and identify trusted helpers.

Hero Role-Play Scenarios (8 Mins)
Experiential Practice
🎭 Scenario A: The Busy Circle Time (Advocating with Words)
Teacher is reading a book. Student feels the whisper in their tummy.
Prompt: Have student raise hand, wait for eye contact, whisper: "Excuse me Ms. [Name], emergency restroom please."
🎭 Scenario B: Shy or Non-Verbal Moment (Using the Cue Card)
Student feels overwhelmed or nervous speaking aloud in a large room.
Prompt: Student walks calmly to teacher desk and points to the visual bathroom badge or holds up the pass.
🎭 Scenario C: "Uh-Oh, Wet Pants" (Dignified Accident Response)
A little pee leaked onto clothing during playtime.
Prompt: Practice calm self-talk: "Accidents happen. My body is learning. I tell my teacher quietly." Adult provides change bag without fuss.
4
Interactive Game: "Sequence Detective Relay" (6 Mins)
Hands-on Sorting
Provide each student pairs of visual cards (e.g., Flush vs. Soap, Knock vs. Pants Down). Call out silly mixed-up steps (e.g., "Do we flush before we sit down?" ). Children jump to the "YES" or "NO" spot and place cards in correct 1-6 sequence order.
Restroom Hero Closing Pledge
"I listen to my body, I ask when I need, I keep myself clean, I am a Restroom Hero indeed!"

Toileting Advocacy Staff Guide Staff Protocol & Leadership Resource
Toileting Advocacy Staff Guide
Trauma-Informed
For Educators & Leaders
The Core Dignity Principle: Toileting accidents in Kindergarten are developmental milestones, not behavioral defiance. Shame and public exposure increase autonomic anxiety, worsening retention and accidents. Protect student privacy, maintain a calm, neutral tone, and empower self-advocacy.
The 4-Step Discreet Accident Protocol
1
Neutral Signal
Catch eye contact quietly. Avoid drawing peer attention or announcing over classroom.
2
Discreet Kit
Hand student their discrete "Go-Bag" (spare clothes in solid tote) with a gentle smile.
3
Support Space
Nurse/staff guides student to private changing stall; provide verbal prompts from outside.
4
Smooth Return
Welcome student back immediately into activity without debriefing in front of peers.
Best Practice Do's & Don'ts
DO (Supportive & Proactive)
• Offer proactive transition breaks before recess, lunch, and bus departure.
• Normalize accidents: "Bodies are learning. We can get fresh clothes."
• Allow non-verbal cues: Honor pass tapping or card showing immediately.
• Desensitize sensory fears: Tour quiet bathrooms, cover auto-flush sensors.
DON'T (Punitive or Harmful)
• Never deny restroom access as a disciplinary consequence or during lessons.
• Never question urgently: "Why didn't you go 5 minutes ago?"
• Never make student carry soiled clothes in transparent bags.
• Never discuss accidents in front of peers or during line-up.
Privacy & Boundary Safety: Always preserve student privacy. Staff stand outside closed stall doors offering verbal coaching unless physical safety requires entry, in which case two adults should be in proximity per district child protection standards.
