- Ask the student what helps them feel ready for different activities (e.g., getting ready for bed, playing a game).
- Explain that today, you'll work together to create a special "Mission Ready" routine for school.
- Present the My Optimal Start Checklist slide deck (Slides 1-2).
2
Exploring Routine Steps
7 Minutes
- Go through Slides 3-6 with the student. Discuss potential steps like finding materials, clearing space, or taking a deep breath.
- Ask: "Which of these do you already do?" and "Which one would make you feel most ready for a mission?"
- Focus on what happens before the task starts that makes it easier or harder.
3
Crafting My Personal Routine
7 Minutes
- Guide the student in selecting 3-5 key steps for their Ready Routine Poster.
- Encourage them to draw, write, or use cards to represent each step. Make it visual and colorful!
- Emphasize: "This is your routine. It should help you feel like a star!"
4
Practicing and Reflecting
3 Minutes
- Role-play the routine together. Have the student "rehearse" their start sequence.

Ready to learn, ready to go!
Let's build your perfect routine!
Session 1
Mission Ready
TEACHER NOTES: Welcome the student and explain that today's goal is to create a personal routine for getting ready to learn. Connect it to things they already do to get ready for other activities.
What Does 'Ready' Mean?
How do you feel when you're ready?
What helps you get ready for other things, like playing outside or eating dinner?
Energy
Focus
Feel Good
TEACHER NOTES: Ask the student what 'ready to learn' means to them. What does it look like, feel like? What challenges do they sometimes face when starting schoolwork?
1
Step 1: My Learning Space
Is your desk clear?
Do you have materials?
Is it a quiet spot?
TEACHER NOTES: Introduce the idea of having a dedicated workspace. Ask if they have one or if they can create one.
2
Step 2: My Body and Brain
Take a deep breath
Stretch your arms
Have a drink of water
TEACHER NOTES: Discuss how the body needs to be ready too. What are some simple ways to prepare physically and mentally?
3
Step 3: Know My Mission
What am I working on?
What do I need to do first?
How long will it take?
TEACHER NOTES: Explain the importance of knowing what the task is. This reduces anxiety about starting.
Your Routine, Your Way!
These are just ideas!
Which steps will make YOU feel ready to learn?
Let's Create!
TEACHER NOTES: Reinforce that these are just ideas and that their routine will be unique to them. Transition to the poster activity.
