Ask: "What does a detective do?" and "How might we be detectives when we read?"
Explain that reading detectives look for clues (details) in the text.

Reading The Sleepy Bear

Distribute The Sleepy Bear Story to each student.
Read aloud with the group, pausing for clarifying questions from the Teacher Script .
Encourage students to highlight or underline important details as you read.

The Sleepy Bear
Location: Whispering Woods
🐻 Subject: Barnaby
Once upon a time, in a cozy den nestled deep within the Whispering Woods, lived a little bear named Barnaby. Barnaby loved to sleep. He loved to sleep so much that his fur was always a little messy from all the naps he took.
One sunny morning, when all the other animals were scampering and playing, Barnaby was still fast asleep. His best friend, a chirpy squirrel named Squeaky, bounced into his den. "Barnaby! Wake up! It's the brightest day for berry picking!" Squeaky chattered, wiggling his nose.
Barnaby yawned a big, wide yawn. "Berries? But my bed is so warm," he mumbled, pulling his blanket made of soft moss closer. Squeaky knew Barnaby loved berries, especially the sweet, juicy ones that grew by the Sparkle Stream.
"But Barnaby, if we don't go now, the rabbits will eat all the best ones!" Squeaky insisted. This made Barnaby open one eye. The thought of missing out on delicious berries was almost enough to get him out of bed.
Slowly, Barnaby stretched his big paws and pushed off his cozy moss bed. He followed Squeaky through the woods, still a little sleepy. When they reached the Sparkle Stream, his eyes popped open wide! The bushes were bursting with the biggest, reddest, juiciest berries he had ever seen!
Barnaby forgot all about being sleepy. He and Squeaky spent the whole morning picking and eating berries. By lunchtime, Barnaby felt wide awake and happy. He realized that sometimes, even if your bed is super cozy, an adventure with a friend and some delicious berries can be even better!

"Good morning/afternoon, my amazing detectives! Today, we're going on a special mission: to become reading detectives!"
"What does a detective do? Can anyone tell me?" (Pause for responses. Guide toward 'finding clues' and 'solving mysteries.')
"Exactly! Detectives look for clues to solve a mystery. When we read, we can be reading detectives by looking for clues, or important details, in the story to understand it better. It's like solving a word mystery!"
Part 2: Re-examining the Evidence (Reading)

"Our mission today is to read a story called The Sleepy Bear Story . As I read, I want you to be super-listening detectives. Your job is to find the important clues that tell us about Barnaby the bear and his adventure."
"I'm going to give each of you a copy of the story. You can follow along with your finger, and if you hear something that sounds like an important clue, you can even gently underline it. Are we ready, detectives?"
