Multiplication is a speedy way to do repeated addition.

Introduce multiplication as repeated addition. Emphasize that it's just a faster way to count equal groups.

Warm-Up: What Do You See? (5 Minutes)
TEACHER: "Hey [Student's Name]! Great to see you today. We're going to dive into a really important and fun math topic. To get us started, I have some groups of [manipulatives] here. What do you notice about these groups? How many are in each group? How many total do you see?"
[Allow time for the student to count and respond. Use the Warm-Up sheet if needed.]
TEACHER: "That's right! You counted them perfectly. Now, what if I asked you to add up all those groups? How would you do that?"
[Allow student to explain repeated addition, e.g., 2 + 2 + 2 = 6.]
Introduction to Multiplication (10 Minutes)
TEACHER: "Fantastic! You just did repeated addition. Today, we're going to learn a super speedy way to do that called multiplication! It's like a shortcut, and it helps us solve problems faster as the numbers get bigger."
Transition to Slide Deck - Slide 2: Multiplication: The Fast Way to Add!
TEACHER: "Look at this example: 2 groups of 3 cookies. We can add 3 + 3 to get 6. But with multiplication, we can write it as 2 x 3 = 6. The 'x' means 'groups of'. So, 2 x 3 means '2 groups of 3'. Isn't that neat?"
Transition to Slide 3: Key Words: Factors and Product
TEACHER: "In multiplication, the numbers we multiply are called factors. So in our cookie example, 2 and 3 are the factors. And the answer, 6, is called the product. It's just like how in addition, the answer is called the sum!"
TEACHER: "Let's try making some of our own groups. Can you show me 3 groups of 2 with these [manipulatives]? What would that look like as a multiplication problem? What's the product?"

TEACHER: "Awesome job! Now, let's look at some cool ways to solve multiplication problems. We're going to use our Multiplication Strategies Worksheet for this."
Transition to Slide 4: Strategy 1: Arrays
TEACHER: "First up are arrays. Think of an array like things lined up in neat rows and columns, like a muffin tray. If I have 3 rows with 4 muffins in each row, how many muffins do I have? How would you write that as a multiplication problem?"
TEACHER: "You got it! 3 x 4 = 12. Let's try drawing an array for 2 x 5 on our worksheet. Remember, it's 2 rows of 5."

TEACHER: "Another great way is using equal groups. If you have 4 bags with 2 candies in each bag, how many candies total? How can we draw that?"
